70 Calves

Calf trade remains solid throughout today with an even mixture of ages to choose from. Angus calves were toping todays trade with bull calves reaching £900 from Hannah Kent, the same firm also had claves @ £890 & £880.

Angus overall averaged £641.

Penty of British Blue calves, of which were mainly younger were topped by PA & D Slater @ £820. Herefords were in demand with Mrs Pam Miller making £820. Herefords overall averaged an impressive £754.

Friesian/Holstein bull calves were in big numbers today with a very strong trade for this breed. Particularly if they’re out of Friesians. On the younger end of B&Ws the top price was £320 from GP Stott. On the older end of B&Ws the top price was £490 from Eddie Newsham. Overall these averaged £359.

Lancaster remains the place for strong calf trade. Do not hesitate to contact us for entries or enquiries all of which are welcome.

Topping the trade for weaned calves was RE & P Miller making £900 for a cracking pen of Angus.

OTM/CAST CATTLE

Lancasters weekly sale of otm/cast cattle saw numbers short of buyer’s requirements with 71 through the bottom ring, consisting of 53 cast cows (averaging 202ppk for a plainer show of meat), 7 otm heifers (averaging 287ppk), 10 cast steers (averaging 317ppk) and 1 cast bull.

DJA & L Sutcliffe, Winmarleigh topping per head with a cast steer at £2287 for Aberdeen Angus steer with others from the same home at £2247 or 334.5ppk. OTM heifers saw M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe to £2275.64 or 359.5ppk for a Limousin with Friesian otm heifers to £1854 or 294.5ppk from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. OTM cows to £2158 for Aberdeen Angus from R & B Parker, Killington. Montbeliarde otm to 314ppk from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Good meated Friesian cows to 234.5ppk or £1900 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham with parlour cows round the 180-190ppk mark. Just 1 cast bull today a Hereford to £2166 from J CH JG Bland, Silverdale.

STORE CATTLE

Lancaster weekly sale of store cattle and monthly sale of stirks saw a catalogued entry of 248 cattle with a plainer younger show of stores.

H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet topping at £2480 for a pair of Charolais steers while EW & CR Clegg, Stalmine had 4 Aberdeen Angus steers to £2380. JD & GM Bracken, Garstang not far behind at £2320 for a trio of British Blue steers. Plenty of other well meated steers round the £2250 mark, with leaner more weathered steers round the £1800-£1900 mark.
Pilling Hall, Pilling with their weekly consignment of cattle saw their pair of Charolais heifers to £2320 with British Blue heifers to £2280 from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet. Hereford heifers to £2180 from ID Bailey & Son, Preston. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2120 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine. Plenty of other store heifers round the £1800 mark.
The monthly sale of stirks saw numbers well short of buyers requirements with this sale seeing prices very much in line with other local centres.

J & SJ Riseborough, Silverdale seeing his 12-month-old Hereford steers to £1550 with the same home selling Aberdeen Angus steers to £1500 also 12-month-old. Other Aberdeen Angus steers from JE & J Pye & Son, Quernmore to £1450 x6 with J Dunwell, Austwick at the same price also for Aberdeen Angus steers with this same home seeing their Aberdeen Angus heifers also to £1450.

More cattle required for next months sale on the 27th November with buyers eager to purchase more younger cattle/stirks on the same day as selling their older stores.
