CALVES

Some heat in the calf trade this morning, with rearers selling to £880 for a British Blue bull from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Other bull calves sold to £800 for Aberdeen Angus again from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Youngest bulls sold to £760 for British Blues from JP&C Robson, Brock or £720 for Charolais from JE&SM Seedall, Mellor with nice month old Herefords to £590 from JR Newsham & Son, Lancaster. Black and whites sold to £360 from C&J Smith, St Michaels.
Heifer calves sold to £760 for a British Blue from Drinkall Bros, Lancaster with Herefords from this home to £660 and £650 and Aberdeen Angus to £620. The youngest end saw British Blues to £690 from JP&C Robson, Brock or three week old Aberdeen Angus to £380 from Brades Farm, Hornby.
A nice entry of weaned heifers from AT Burrow, Gressingham sold to £1260 on eight occasions for British Blues at seven to eleven months, with Limousins to the same age £1240 and £1220.

STORE CATTLE

Lancasters weekly store cattle sale saw a strong show of cattle with trade definitely sharper on the week with new faces round the ring seeing a pleasing average of steers at £2030 and heifers at £1901 which included 20 cattle under 14 months old.

A trio of well grown Aberdeen Angus steers topped the stores at £2450 from JS Clark & Sons, Preston with KH & D Holden, Pilling not far behind at £2380 also for Aberdeen Angus. British Blue steer to £2350 from J Lamb, Glasson, other British Blue at £2300 from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet. Limousin steers to £2280 from J & H Bland & Son, Levens other Limousin from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg to £2200. J & H Bland continued his good days trading with Herefords to £2220 and his dairy bred steers to £1900 for Friesians. Plenty of continental bred steers today trading in the £2100-£2200 mark.

Good show of store heifers today with at top price of £2200 firstly from Andrew & Charlie Butler, Hambleton for a stylish Blonde heifer and secondly from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet this time for a British Blue, other British Blues at £2180 from JW & DL Park, Ellel. Aberdeen Angus heifers always easily sold at Lancaster and today would be no exception with KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling to £2180 for a pair with Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton not far behind at £2120. Other Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2050 from JW & DL Park, Ellel. Simmental heifers to £1980 from AT Burrow & Son, Lancaster.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

Lancaster weekly OTM sale saw trade very similar on the week with numbers well short of buyer’s requirements with ten buyers ring side all eager for cattle. Topping the OTM ring today per head and per kilo was GR&A Foy, Conder Green for a Shorthorn cow achieving 324.5p/kg or £2219.58. Other beef bred cows achieved £1954 or 264.5p/kg for a Hereford from N Barker, Burton in Kendal. Friesian cows topped at 289.5p/kg firstly from R Packham & Sons, Docker and secondly from Richmond Hall Farms, Cockerham with top price per head coming from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. All OTM cows today averaged 235p/kg.
Cast steers saw J Oddie & Sons, Balderston to £2207.75 or 319.5p/kg, with an average of 302p/kg achieved.
OTM heifers from EW&RM Towers, Hornby to £2016 or 324p/kg for Friesian, with beef bred OTM heifers to 314.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus from R&D Kellet, Cockerham. All OTM heifers averaged 303p/kg.
Just one cast bull today at £2090 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside.
