PRIME LAMBS

Lambs cure the Monday blues: Flying trade from the first bell

Nothing gloomy about the start of the week as lambs met a red hot trade first thing Monday morning, with buyers keen from the outset. Prices soared across the board with well finished stock in strong demand and averages hitting an impressive 380p/kg. The buzz around the ring set the tone for a confident days selling as vendors saw returns well above expectations. Ten buyers ringside today.

A 45kg Beltex from D & K Swarbrick flew to 429ppk or 193 pounds per head. The same good home sold Texels to 420ppk and Charolais to 420ppk. Messrs T & S Blades sold a pair of Beltex at 42kgs to 424ppk. Heavies also up on the week! 4 Continentals from A & FM Bolland & Sons sold to 404ppk while 50kg Texels from O Gorst hit 396ppk or £198. Lighter lambs also a joy to sell. G Beresford sold a pen of 7 38kg Texels for 400ppk/£152. The same good home had a further 7 39kgs just 3ppk less at 397ppk/£155. Again the message is clear sell sell sell as more sheep are required to meet massive demand.

CAST EWES

Cast sheep continue to fly

A strong trade for cast sheep once again at Lancaster. Texels topped at £232 from Messrs R & DL Cornthwaite. A&E Clarkson Ltd sold one for £220. R&DL Cornthwaite sold another for £218. Messrs KA Purtill sold half a dozen over the £200 mark. Mules topped at £184 from J&A Heap & Sons. Again a lack of numbers the only issue with demand through the roof!
