Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep - Monday 30th November 2020

Prime Lambs

Lancaster had an increased entry and an improved trade with 758 lambs forward selling to an overall market average of 208p/kg and an SQQ of 210p/kg which included a large number of upland and horned lambs. Handy weighted lambs between 38 and 45kg continue to be in strongest demand with Continental lambs often selling towards 220p/kg. Heavy weighted lambs were a sharper trade often selling over 200p/kg.
It was the consignment from J Bargh and Son, Morecambe that led the way selling a Texel lamb to £110, weighing 45kg and purchased by Kennedy Butchers, Morecambe. This was followed by 52kg Texel lambs from P Lawrenson and Son, Chorley selling to £109 purchased by George Blacklidge. Other lambs from this home saw Texels sell to £108 twice and £107.50 and Charolais lambs selling to £107, £106.50 and £105.50. Other noted prices for Texel saw T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping selling 54kg lambs to £109. The consignment of Texel lambs from L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle sold to £108 and £106.50; with plenty more pens of lambs selling in excess of the one hundred pound mark. Best confirmation lambs saw Beltex lambs sell to 274p/kg from S Bosworth, Burnley with Texel lambs selling to 250p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with plenty of better pens around 240p/kg.
A larger proportion of upland lambs in the market today, saw Mules sell to £94 weighing 47kg from T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping with other Mule lambs to £93.50 at 45kg from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock and £93 at 45kg from D Gardner, Brookhouse. All Mule lambs forward averaged 205p/kg or £88.18. Horned lambs sold to a top of £85 for 43kg Dalesbreds from T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping with Swaledale lambs to £82 from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore with all Swale lambs forward averaging 200p/kg.

Texels sold to £110 averaging £97.22 or 210p/kg
Beltex sold to £96, averaging £96 or 274p/kg

Cast Sheep

There was an increased entry of cast sheep in the market selling to an increased trade. Leading the way were Leicester rams from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead selling to £148 with others selling to £102. Other rams saw Suffolk’s selling to £106 from DJ Hay, Cockerham. All tups forward averaging over £100. Once again stronger Continental ewes sold over the one hundred pound mark topping at £108 from JM Sanderson, Halton, with plenty of pens of Continental ewes selling in the nineties. Mule ewes sold to £80 from Ripley St Thomas School.
Larger numbers of upland ewes were on offer today and saw Cheviot ewes selling to £84 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale with others from the same home to £73. Horned ewes sold to a top of £65 for Scotch Blackface from G Blacklidge, Chorley with other horned sheep to £61 from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton with plenty more selling towards £60.
