Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had an entry of 600 forward that saw well-fleshed and good conformation hoggs continue to be a good trade but quite a number of hoggs lacking finish today were harder to place which led to an overall market average of 196p/kg. Best conformation Texel hoggs, weighing 52kg, sold to £117 from AG Butler with other Texel hoggs selling to £114.50 with Beltexs selling to 239p/kg or £114.50 all from the same home. A consignment of heavy weight hoggs from J Smith, Dasiy Bank saw Texels sell to £111 Charollais to £109 and Suffolks to £107. Other heavy weight Suffolks from G Riley, Bolton-le-Sands sold to £108. Achieving £106 was R & FL Cornthwaite, Nateby with Texels with Charollais from T & E Burrow, Slyne to the same price with another pen to £105. Benson Farms, Brock saw heavy weight Texels sell to £105. A consignment of heavy weight hoggs from RS & IM Kellet, Cockerham sold Texels to £105 and £103 with Suffolks from the same home to £104.

Best conformation lambs saw Texels sell to 243p/kg or £104.50 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with Beltex hoggs from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth sell to 243p/kg with Charollais from the same home selling to 241p/kg. The consignment from AG Butler sold to 239p/kg and 234p/kg for Beltex and Texel hoggs. Plenty of pens of those better conformation hoggs sold around the 230p/kg mark.

Upland bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to £100 from AT Allcock, Inskip with Mule lambs this week topping at £86 from A Chard, Roeburndale and £85.50 from JW Cornall, Bleasdale. Scottish Blackface lambs sold to 207p/kg or £85 from WM Pye, Ashton-with-Stodday.

Cast Sheep

There was an increased entry of ewes forward this week that saw the consignment of Beltex x Texel ewes from J Smith, Daisy Bank sell to £133, £126 and £121. Texel ewes from T & CM Kelsall & Son, Chipping sold to £117 and £104. Mule ewes sold to £100 from PG Thornton, Scorton. Leicester ewes topped at £90 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes sold around the £90 mark. Horned ewes sold to a top of £69 from JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasdale.
