GRASS FEVER GRIPS J36 – BUYERS OUT IN FORCE

The Annual Grass Day Show and Sale of Store Cattle at J36 delivered a trade that comfortably exceeded expectations. With a packed ringside of travelled buyers ensuring a fast, competitive sale throughout. Demand was evident across the board with many purchasers operating in numbers and keen to secure especially grazing cattle. Whilst the biggest types were a shade easier on the fortnight reflecting the current pressures in the finished trade. – the overall market remained remarkably buoyant.

British Blue heifers topped the trade at £2650 from Maisie Beresford. Limousin heifers sold to £2250 from Messrs RG & LR Holmes. Others sold to £2180 from M & L Preece. Charolais heifers topped at £2080 from JA & CA Gibson.
Bullocks hit £2420 for a topper of a Limousin from RH & C Ayrton. The same home sold others to £2340, £2240 and a British Blue at £2200. Robyn Allen’s good run topped at £2180 for a 12 month old bullock. Limousin bullocks from Messrs S&M Cooper and a pen of 4 Limousins from A & E Atkinson also made £2180.

CAST COWS/OTMS

OTM’s were a pleasing trade with cows to 294.5p/kg for a Limousin from PR Escolme, Endmoor with other suckler cows to 289.5p/kg for a British Blue from JA & J Harper, Sedbergh. Black and white cows sold to 289.5p/kg from PW & D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow with the best of these all 245.5p/kg plus. Gross prices are still adding up well, selling to £2911.67 for a cast bull from AJ Wilson, Nether Kellet with a cracking heavyweight black and white cow to £2314.74 from Jenkin Crag Farms, Kendal.

A handful of OTM steers and heifers sold to 324.5p/kg for a steer from J Alderson & Sons, Howgill with B&J Knowles selling British Blue x heifers to 314.5/kg and 309.5p/kg.

STIRKS

There was a smaller show of stirks due to a packed out Store market. Trade still held firm despite the movement in fat prices affecting buyers’ confidence. Topping trade today was a smart Hereford steer from PG & PD Airey, Cartmel making £1320

The fortnightly sale of calves at J36 saw a blistering trade for rearers with older weaned types slightly easier on the last sale.

Bull calves topped at £1000 on 3 occasions all for British Blues from Bambers Farm Ltd, Thurnham. Limousins sold to £810 from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme with this good home selling Aberdeen Angus to £800 too. Younger rearers sold to £730 twice for British Blues from Lawkland Hall, Austwick with this good home also selling very smart Herefords to £590. Limousins born 3 April 2026 from B & MJ Nelson sold to £580 with black and whites topping today at £470 from J & B Morley, Great Asby with 30 days old black and whites to £300 from RG & JA Clark, Far Audlands.

Heifer calves sold to £880 for British Blues from Bambers Farm, Thurnham with other British Blues selling to £840 from MH & AR Robinson, Holmescales or £710 from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack. Limousins sold to £720 from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme and Aberdeen Angus to £680 from J & B Morley. Month old Herefords sold to £640 and £620 from Lawkland Hall, Austwick with British Blues at this age from Dolphenby Farming Ltd to £670 and £640 four times. 3 week old Limousins sold to £480 from B & MJ Nelson, Heversham.
