Prime Lambs

There was an increased entry, once again, of 1647 lambs forward selling to an overall market average of 162p/kg. Well-fleshed lambs continue to be in strong demand with leaner types, again, harder to place. Best Beltex lambs sold easily in excess of the 200p/kg. Topping the trade at 237p/kg or £95 for 40kg from F & CE Bentley, Shap with others selling to 216p/kg or £93 from Wannop Farms Ltd, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Heavy weight Texel lambs sold to £96 from B & R Barnes, Carnforth with other Texel lambs to £93 from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook and to £92.50 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Heavy weight Charollais lambs sold to £92 from JR Senior, Cartmel Fell with plenty more heavy weight lambs selling in the eighties.

The annual show and sale of ‘Bonny Boys’ for pens of five Mule wether lambs had a strong line up for judge George Harryman to cast his eye over. He awarded the first prize to Bob Lawrence of Grange over sands selling 53kg lambs to £82. All mule lambs forward averaged 154p/kg.

Cast Sheep

There was an increased entry of 667 Cast Sheep forward selling to a very similar trade. Topping the market was Charollais tups from T Sharp, Burneside selling to £120. Beltex ewes sold to £112 and £97 from CM Jennings, Selside. Texel ewes sold to £86 from R & E Ladds, Kendal with plenty more selling around the eighty-pound mark. Mule ewes sold to £69 from R & E Ladds with plenty more best Mule ewes selling in the mid-sixties. Horned ewes sold to a top of £47 for Rough Fells from TLB & J Knowles, Selside.
