Spring Lambs

There was a stronger trade at Lancaster for the majority of lambs even though the average was only a penny better than last week finishing at 145ppk. A lot more consignments of heavier lambs were forward leading to the reduced average. Heavy lambs continue to sell well at Lancaster with Suffolk and continental lambs 48kg+ selling easily in excess of £70 topping at £82 for Suffolk’s from WN & D Smith & Sons of Cockerhouse. Better types of lambs saw 44kg Texel’s from JK & BE Townley of Mearsbeck sell to £72.50. Buyers were cautious of lean lambs with many pens of well finished continental lambs selling between £20 and £22 above their weights. More mule lambs in the auction today saw 44kg Mule from T Ayrton and Son of Yates Farm sell to £60.50 with 43kg Mule sell to £60 from JS & S Atkinson.

Cast Sheep

The ewe trade has lifted from a couple of weeks since with buyers certainly looking for cast sheep. Mule ewes sold to £74 from S Wilson and Son of Burrow Heights with strong fit mule ewes easily selling in the late sixties as an overall mule average of £64. Texel ewes topped at £86 from JK & BE Townley of Mearsbeck. A larger proportion of Swaledale ewes in the market today with better types selling in the mid to late forties and plainer ewes selling around £30.
