Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 30th May 2022.

Spring Lambs
More spring lambs were forward today in Lancaster with just shy of 600, selling to a strong trade with by far the most demand from buyers so far this season. Heavy weight spring lambs were in big demand with 54kg Texels selling to £ 168 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with the consignment from B&M Slater, Chipping also achieving £168 with 50kg for Texels. Suffolks sold to a top of £166 at 47kg from James Sanderson, Halton whom sold Texels to £159. Other Suffolk lambs sold to £164 at 51kg from J Lamb, Old Glasson. The consignment from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth saw his Texels peak at £162. This was followed by the consignment from JS Horner, Ingleton selling to £161 and £157. Texels from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh sold to £158 at 43kg. A large number of pens of good quality lambs sold in excess of the £150 mark. Texel lambs peaked at 390p/kg for 40kg lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe which grossed at £156. Plenty more pens of better bred lambs sold between 360-380p/kg. The overall market averaged was 329p/kg, with all lambs forward averaging £138 a head.

Prime Hoggs
Just shy of 300 prime hoggs were forward today, which saw well meated ones continue to be in big demand and eagerly bid for, with this continuing to be the case until the festival at the start of July. A consignment of Dutch Texel x hoggs from GR&A Foy, Conder Green led the way selling to £166, £155 and £147, with plenty more selling in the £130’s and £140’s. Handy weighted well finished Continental hoggs sold to 305p/kg from T&E Burrow, Slyne and 302p/kg from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston. Horned hoggs sold to £130, £129 and £128 from M&YS Barker, Halton with Scottish Black Faces.

Cast Sheep
The cast sheep trade remains very strong with tups leading the way today, a couple of Charollais from James Burr, Quernmore sold to £234 with a couple of Texel tups selling to £188 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Beltex ewes peaked at £190 from WJ Standen & Son, Lancaster with other Texel ewes to £187 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Charollais ewes peaked at £180 from T&S Blades, Arkholme with Mule ewes selling to a top of £148 from the same good home, with others to £143 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth and plenty more sold in the late £130’s. All cast sheep forward today averaged £133.
