Sheep with Lambs at Foot
The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot included the second show and sale of hoggs with lambs at foot which saw all speciation’s in big demand and eagerly bid for. The pre sale show was ably judged by local shepherd Alasdair Prickett, Farleton who we thank for his time and expertise. Winning the championship rosette was the first prize pen of Mule gimmer hoggs from Winter Brothers, Appleby. This much admired pen of Mule gimmer hoggs with Suffolk lambs at foot caught the eye with their sharp colour and saw eager bidding, selling to the days top price of £350 with another pen from the same home selling to £340. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Continental hoggs with Beltex lambs at foot, this quality pen of hoggs was consigned by DJ Clarke Farming, Calder Vale which went on to sell for £340. Plenty of commercial hoggs on the market today saw pens sell between £220 and £240 with vendors leaving well chuffed with their trade.
The trade for sheep with lambs at foot continues to be very strong with the consignment from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell selling Continental shearlings with lambs to £260 with Mule shearlings with twin lambs to £245 from the same home. Two crop Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs sold to £260 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. More hill sheep forward on the market today saw Swaledale ewes with single Continental lambs selling to £115 from IR Cooper, Penrith. Broken mouthed Herdwick ewes with single Continental lambs twice sold to £105 from Kirkby & Longworth, Broughton in Furness.

Spring Lambs
The best trade seen so far this season with 11 active buyers ring side, ensuring all speciation’s of lambs were eagerly bid for selling to an overall market average 330p/kg and SQQ of 335p/kg with handy weights averaging 357p/kg. All lambs forward averaging £141.54 for the 600 forward. Heavy weights led the way with a pen of 53kg Texels selling to £175 from JN&DJ Bowes, Crook purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop with other lambs from this same home selling to £170. This was followed by 54kg Texels selling to £172 from IL Dixon, Cantsfield with others from the same home selling to £170. The consignment from DE&SM Moorehouse, Natland peaked at £172 for 51kg Texels purchased by Westmorland Services. Suffolk lambs peaked at £170 weighing 50kg from J&R Waller, Killington purchased by Westmorland Services. A pen of 19 Suffolk lambs from G Sagar & Son, Caton sold to £163. Heavy weight Zwartbles sold to £163 from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack. Best confirmation lambs today sold in the region of 400p/kg with Beltexs peaking at 415p/kg from AD Atkinson & Son, Endmoor who’s Beltex lambs peaked at £157 at 38kgs.

Prime Hoggs
The trade for prime hoggs saw well meated heavy weights sell to a strong trade with lean types meeting realisation. Heavy weight Texel hoggs peaked at £167 from JB Airey, Kendal with other Texel hoggs to £152 from AJ Barker, Todmorden. Well meated hoggs remain in strong demand.

Cast Sheep
Pure bred Texel ewes led the way selling to £230 from M Radcliffe, Glossop with other pure Texel ewes selling to £220 from H Geldard, Foulshaw who sold others to £216. Pure bred ewes were regularly selling over the £200 mark. Charollais ewes topped at £196 from R Wilson, Appleby. Continental bred ewes were regularly selling at the £160 - £170 mark. Mule ewes were the trade of the day topping at £158 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton with others to £153 from DM&D Cook, Ulverston with 115 Mule ewes averaging £128. All hill ewes were strongly bid for with a full pen of Rough Fell ewes selling to £142 from W Beck & Son, Tebay. Cheviot ewes sold to £122 from GG U&D Swarbrick, Meathorpe.
All cast rams continue to sell to a flying trade with 20 forward averaging £144. Topping at £218 for a Cheviot from A&CM Carter, Witherslack with the best Continental bred tups well over the £200 mark.
