Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 13th June 2022

Spring Lambs:

Lancaster’s weekly sale of spring lambs had the largest entry of the season forward of 840 selling to an overall market average of 310p/kg. Lancaster once again boosted a busy ring of buyers keen to purchase all specifications of lambs. The consignment of Beltex and Texel lambs from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet lead the way selling to £156, £155 twice and £150 twice. This was matched by the consignment from DA Wilcock, Wigan selling Texel’s to £156 and Suffolk’s to £155. Heavy weight Texel’s from S & J France, Over Wyresdale sold to £151. Beltex lambs from D Cockett, Ingelton sold to £150. The top pence per kilo of the day were Beltex lambs selling to 380p/kg and 375p/kg from JS Horner, Ingelton. Plenty of pens of good confirmation lambs selling either side of the 350p/kg mark. Prime Hoggs:

Numbers of prime hoggs begin to tighten with well fleshed hoggs in big demand and eagerly bid for. The consignment from JM Kelsall & Son, Quernmore sold Charolais’s to £150 and Texel’s to £140. A consignment of horned hoggs from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock sold Swaledales to £117 and £115 with Dalesbreds selling to £115. The demand for well fleshed hoggs remains strong.

Cast Sheep:

There was a bumper entry of cast sheep forward today with over 225 forward meeting strong demand from Lancaster’s busy ring of buyers. Taking top spot at £200 was a continental tup from S & J France, Over Wyresdale. Texel cross ewes sold to £188 from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale whom sold other to £162 and £160. Texel Ewes from B&M Salter, Chipping sold to £168 with others selling to £156 from the same home. Plenty of continental ewes sold in the one forties and one fifties. Suffolk cross ewes sold to £164 from P Stringfellow, Chorley. Leicester ewes sold to £138 from AC&K Pye, Abbeystead. Mule ewes peaked at £137 from AG Butler, Hambelton with others to £136 from H Birkett & Son Overton, £135 from T & EA Garth, Bleasdale and £134 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. There were plenty of pens of strong mule ewes selling in the region of one hundred and thirty. Pens of cheviot mule ewes twice sold to £136 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. A few more horned sheep now starting to come forward saw a pen of Swaledale ewes sell to £99 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead.
