Pigs
One of the largest of entries of pigs forward for the first sale in June with 161 sold on behalf of customers from throughout the Northern Counties and Scotland.
Prime pigs sold to £136 for Pietrain x hoggs from J Stott Jnr, Kingsland with other hogs at £134 from JM Navesey, Darwen and £130 from C Dean & LJ Brennand, Clapham. Prime gilts sold to £134 from W Mason & Son, Settle with others at £132 from MP Tattersall, Langholme and £120 from JM Navesey, Darwen. Prime boars sold to £112 from MP Tattersall, Langholme with others at £100 from T Marshall, High Bentham.
Topping the pence per kilo this sale was J Stott Jnr, Kingsland achieving 155p/kg with other well finished prime pigs generally 125p/kg – 135pkg.
Several cull sows forward sold to £78 from Northrigg Hill Farm, Carlisle with boars to £45 from Lowther Park Farm, Penrith.
Weaners and stores were forward on large numbers with 95 at today’s sale. A pen of mixed Pietrains from D Thackrey, Harrogate with others at £42 from D Boardman, Horwich. Younger weaners sold to £32 from R Holden, Millom.
Sheep with Lambs at Foot
There continues to be plenty of demand for sheep with lambs at foot, with trades today peaking at £265 for Texel ewes and twin Texel lambs from T Bingham, Burneside who sold Texel ewes with singles to £185. Two crop Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs at foot sold to £242 from A&M Skidmore, Tebay. A run of Mule and Continental hoggs from R Health, Bootle sold Continental hoggs with twins to £242 and Continental hoggs with singles to £235. Mule hoggs from the same home with twins sold to £112 with Mule hoggs with singles to £210. The hill sheep forward today saw broken mouthed twin Swaledales ewes with Continental twin lambs to £135 from RA Clegg & LD Bennett, Broughton in Furness. Swaledale ewes with singles sold to £115 from L Reade, Rochdale. Full mouthed Herdwick ewes with single Continental lambs sold to £100 from K Wrathall, Broughton in Furness.
Spring Lambs
An entry of just shy of 700 spring lambs forward this week averaging 304p/kg with 45-50kg lambs n the strongest demand averaging 310p/kg. The consignment from RW&S Nicholason, Lupton topped the pence per kilo selling to 385p/kg or £150 with a Beltex lamb. Plenty of pens of better conformation lambs sold around the 150p/kg mark. Topping the market at £170 were heavy weight Suffolks from A&B Fell, Millom with other heavy weights to £165 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Texels sold to a top of £169 from JN&BJ Bowes, Crook with other heavy weight Texels to £165 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other leading prices for Texel lambs was £162 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale and £161 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. Plenty of pens of lambs sold in the £150 mark.
Prime Hoggs
The weekly sale of prime hogg saw hoggs in big demand and well bid for. Texel sold to £165 from AE&RJ Briggs, Wennington with Charollais peaking at £157 from RJ Stott, Stainton. Pens of Herdwicks twice peaked at £120 from R Doran, Winmarleigh.
Cast Sheep
• Cast rams topped at £190 from a Leicester ram from Clegg & Bennett, Seathwaite.
• Cast ewes sold to a top of £166 for a Suffolk from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe.
• Mule ewes sold to £147 for a pen of six from GC&L Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale.
• Hill Cheviots sold to a top of £168 from HR&K Hodgson, Barbon.
• Rough Fells sold to £129 from T Ellis, New Hutton. A pen of 27 Rough Fells sold to £112 from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh.
• Swaledale topped at £114 for a pen of 7 from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale.
