Champion Spring Lamb sells to £225 at Lancaster

Spring Lambs

A fantastic start to the spring lamb season at Lancaster with an impressive market average of 389p/kg. It was our Champion that took top spot selling to £225 or 592p/kg from W A & L M Jenkinson, Stalmine with a 38kg shapely Beltex lamb purchased by the judge Michael Lomax on behalf of Nigel Wilkinson Butchers of Blackpool. Reserve Champion from the same home was a 40kg Texel selling to £195 or 488p/kg purchased by a great supporter of Lancaster Mondays, Gregory Williams Butchers of Lancaster.

The first placed native sired lamb came from M J & L C Lund, Quernmore selling a 44kg Dorset lamb to £170. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £182 from TA Blair, Poulton Le Fylde. Charolais lambs at 45kg from AV Bailey, Cheshire sold to £181 and £180. All spring lambs forward today averaged at £159.81.

Breeding Sheep

A larger entry of sheep with lambs at foot forward today with outfits to suit all buyers requirements. The consignment from Joshua France, Pilling took the top spot selling to £252 with Suffolk cross ewes suckling Suffolk twin lambs. From the same home saw young Texel ewes with shapely single Texel lambs selling to £210. Once again from Joshua, Texel sheep with young twin lambs sold to £220. Aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs from David and Karen Swarbrick sold to £225 and £218.

It is business as normal on Easter Monday at Lancaster with entries invited for advertising.

Prime Hoggs

Variety was certainly the word today with a broad spectrum in quality of the hoggs on offer. Well fleshed handy weighted hoggs were most in demand and easiest to sell. A pen of 11 heavy weight Texel hoggs from George Sanderson and Family, Catforth led the way selling to £146. This was followed by the consignment from Andrew Butler selling Beltex and Texel hoggs to £145, £143, £138 and £137. A smart pair of Beltex hoggs from S Bosworth, Burnley sold to £144 with others from the same home selling to 358p/kg. Cheviot hoggs sold to £121.50 and £119.50 from PJ & P Mason, Out Rawcliffe weighing 41kg and 40kg. Mule hoggs peaked at £118 from J Fryars, Kirkham. Horned hoggs sold to £104 for Swaledales from RG & H Preece, Roeburndale West with plenty more selling £100 plus. The market averaged 270p/kg.

Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade remains very buoyant at Lancaster and more are required. Cast tups led the way with a Texel to £138 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Suffolk tups achieving the same from S Moore, Pilling. Continental ewes were eagerly bid for selling to £128 for Charolais from J France, Pilling with Blue Texels selling to the same price from KA Purtill, Bolton. Plenty of Continentals sold to £110 and beyond. There was not the same strength in the Mule sheep as last week, which saw them top of £98 from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale. Swaledale ewes sold to £97 from T Ayrton and Son, Over Wyresdale.
