Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 8th February 2021

Prime Hoggs

This trade continues to remain strong with another good market average of 251p/kg for an increased entry of 597 forward including 145 horned, therefore a quarter of today’s entry. Handy weighted hoggs averaged at 263p/kg.

Top price this week were Texel hoggs from L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle selling to £146. This was closely followed by the consignment from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore selling Beltex hoggs to £145, £140, £137 and £134 or 345p/kg, 334p/kg and 318p/kg. The consignment of Texel and Beltex hoggs from Andrew Butler sold to £144, £143, £133 and £130 with this consignment peaking at 310p/kg. All Beltex hoggs forward averaged £134 or 314p/kg. G & D Ball and Son, Great Eccleston sold Texel hoggs to £129 with Charollais hoggs selling to £128 from S Rossall, Scorton. Over thirty percent of the pens of hoggs forward sold in excess of £120.

Mule hoggs peaked at £114 twice from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton and Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth. 40kg Masham hoggs peaked at £109 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Horned hoggs topped at £109 for Dalesbreds from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of cast sheep were forward of 155 selling to a sharper trade. Texel tups took top spot selling to £130 from H Birkett & Son, Overton with others selling to £118 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Charollais tups peaked at £110 from R Doran, Winmarleigh.

The cast sheep trade peaked at £125 from A & L Huddleston, Wray with others selling to £118 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Texel ewes peaked at £120 from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston with others from the same home selling to £122 and £110. Other noted prices for Texel ewes was £113 from G & D Ball and Son, Great Eccleston. Plenty of Continental ewes selling in excess of the £100 mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £93 from R Doran, Winmarleigh and £92 from G & D Ball and Son, Great Eccleston. Plenty of strong Mules selling around the ninety pound mark.

Horned ewes sold to a top of £88 for Lonks from Gus Brown, Littledale. Swaledale ewes sold to £63 from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston with plenty of Swaledale ewes selling over £60.
