Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of prime hoggs at J36 had an improved entry in excess of 1000 forward. As to be expected a large quantity of horned and hill bred hoggs forward with a market average of 253p/kg with handy weighted hoggs averaging 260p/kg. John Twigge, Lindale took top spot selling his consignments of Texel and Beltex hoggs to £137 and £134 with his consignment peaking at 304p/kg. Top pence per kilogram this week was 315p/kg for Beltex hoggs from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal. Plenty of pens of good confirmation hoggs selling around the 300p/kg. Plenty of handy weighted Continental hoggs sold between 265-280p/kg. Texel hoggs sold to £133 from GM Metcalfe Jnr, Underbarrow and others to £132 from RH M & S Boyren, Ulverston. Suffolk hoggs sold to a top of £132 from TH Garnett & Son, Barrow in Furness. Continental and Suffolk hoggs regularly selling beyond the £120 mark.

Upland hoggs saw Mules peak at £126 from MG Tomlinson, Weston Underwood weighing 54kg with others selling to £124.50 weighing 51kg from T & H Drinkall, Oakenclough. Horned hoggs peaked at £116 for Scotch Black Face from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with Lonks peaking £110 from GJ Ibbetson, Roeburndale West.

Handy weighted and light weight hoggs that are well fleshed continue to be in strong demand with plenty of buyers in the market for all specifications of hoggs in J36.

Cast Sheep

A larger show of cull ewes were forward with 650 going through the ring today. All cast sheep maintained their recent high rates with fleshy, horned ewes being particularly good to sell. Pure bred Texels sold to a strong trade topping at £135 from JW & A Matthews, Patton with others to £133 from GB Holt, Lancaster, with many of the better end of the Texel ewes selling in the £120 – £130 region.

A run of Beltex ewes from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £125. Calderside Farms, Garstang sold Leicester ewes to £125 with Suffolks selling to £115 from RH & M & S Boyren, Ulverston.

A bigger show of Mule ewes were forward with the best being dearer on the week, topping at £107 from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook with the next level down selling between £90 and £95. All Mules forward averaged £80.

All hill ewes were keenly bid for with Rough Fell ewes selling to £90 from L Potter, Orton and Cheviot ewes selling to £86 twice from S Crawford, Staveley and JM Harrison, Broughton in Furness. There were 200 Swaledales forward today with the best selling at £80 plus and topping at £85 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton with the next level down selling at £70 - £75. Herdwick ewes continued to be well bid for at J36 topping at £74 from J Wills, Grayrigg.

There were 30 tups forward today topping at £150 for a Suffok tup from TH Garnett & Son, Stank with Charollais from the same home selling to £128. Leicester rams from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale sold to £119.
