Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 4th September

Store Cattle

There was, once again, an offering of over 300 cattle forward today with short term well-fleshed cattle a roaring trade and in strong demand and weathered cattle a slightly easier trade with more on the market. It was great to welcome back some familiar faces purchasing cattle.

Angus cattle stole the show this week selling to a top of £1390 for a pen of four bullocks from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth. This was closely followed by £1330 from T & M Halhead, Carnforth. A pen of 6 Angus bullocks from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine sold to £1290. Limousin bullocks peaked at £1310 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside, followed by a pen of 5 Limousin bullocks selling to £1280 from CP & V Cowgill, Bentham with another pen of five Limousin bullocks selling to £1270. Vendors are strongly urged to batch cattle together. Simmental bullocks topped at £1280 from H Birkett & Son, Overton with British Blue bullocks to £1250 from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall.

The heifers this week twice peaked at £1240, firstly for a pen of three British Blues from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine and secondly for Shorthorn heifers from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Closely behind this at £1210 was British Blue heifers from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall. Plenty of pens of strong cattle sold around the £1200 mark.

Dairy bullocks sold to £1140 for Fleckviehs from R & K Jenkinson, Pilling with Ayrshire bullocks to £1120 from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumton. This was matched by black and whites also selling to £1120 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons.

Bulls this week sold a top of £960 for Limousins from A Rigby, Wigan.

Cast Cows

There was over 100 Cast Cows and OTM Cattle this week at Lancaster with 118 selling to an overall market average of 128p/kg. Leading the way was Limousin cast steers from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow selling to 217.5p/kg and 211.5p/kg or £1196 and £1186. OTM Heifers peaked at 201p/kg or £1122 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. OTM Cows sold to a top of 179.5p/kg for Angus’ from T & M Halhead which topped the market at £1292. This was closely followed by Limousin cows selling to 174.5p/kg from RH, M & S Boyren, Ulverston which grossed at £1224.

Best dairy cows sold between 140p/kg and 145p/kg selling to a top price per head of £1190 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel followed by cows from Lawson Dairy, Cockerham selling to £1162 and £1109 and achieving £1100 was T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping.

Calves & Stirks

The calf trade remains very strong with buyers in the market ensuring were all specifications of calves were eagerly bid for. Once again, a selection of suckler bred calves in the market led the way with a couple of 3 month old blonde heifers selling to £570 and £540 from SJ & NS Wood, Windermere. The consignment from J & G Thornley, Roseacre saw British Blue bulls twice sell to £525 with British Blue heifer calves to £485 and Angus bull caves to £480 from the same home. British Blue bull calves sold to £440 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with others to £425 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Plenty of British Blue bull calves sold in the mid three hundreds.

Black and white calves this week sold a top of £180 from JF & J Hewitt & Family, Nateby with plenty of strong rearing bull calves selling between £120 and £140.

There was a handful of stirks on offer today that peaked at £610 for British Blue heifers from JF & J Hewitt & Family, Nateby.
