J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 3rd September

Calves

There was an entry of 85 calves forward this week selling to a sharper trade. Leading the way was a British Blue bull from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth selling to £430, with other British Blue bulls selling to £405 from HJ Robinson & Son. All British Blue bulls averaged £355. Native bred bull calves sold to a strong demand. Aberdeen Angus sold to £360 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Luing bulls from JW & TE Sharp sold to £305. Limousin heifers from CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton sold to £410 with British Blue heifers selling to £385 from MH & SJ Morris, Allithwaite. More native bred heifers were forward today with Aberdeen Angus selling to £385 twice from TW & CA Long, Ulverston.

Black and white calves continue to sell to a strong trade with the best £150 and topping at £190 from Bambers Farm, with others selling to £185 from CM & CS Chappelhow. Medium types £65 - £80 with smaller types £30 - £45.

A run of weaned Montbeliarde bull calves from C Dent, Kirkby Thore topped at £360 twice with weaned black and whites from Bambers Farm selling to £330.

50 stirks were forward and strong, well farmed stirks continue to sell to a strong demand. Limousin bulls sold to £780 from CM & CS Chappelhow. A run of Fleckvieh bullocks from A Prickett sold to a top of £770 with Charolais bullocks from the same good home selling to £725. Limousin heifers sold to £650, with 5-month-old British Blue heifers selling to £500 from Messrs Young.

Cast Cows

A strong entry of cows were forwards at the sale with buyers at the ringside with orders to fill.

Beef cows sold to 174.5p/kg for a Limousin x from A Hodgson & Son, Ambleside with others regularly selling at 140p/kg – 155p/kg with keen interest in cows for further feeding.

Dairy cows sold to 139.5p/kg for a Friesian from R & A Galbraith, Crooklands with other heavy and well fleshed dairies 120p/kg – 130p/kg. All cows forward averaged 128p/kg.

Top grossing cow was a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside selling at £1236 with numerous other heavy cows £1000 - £1100, to include the top priced dairy at £1040 from R & A Galbraith, Crooklands.

OTM heifers sold to 157.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh. Steers sold to 194.5p/kg and £1178 for BrBx from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.

Cull bulls sold to 114.5p/kg and £831 for a Whitebred Shorthorn.

The next sale of cull cows is Thursday 17th September with a large entry required to meet buyers demand.

Store Cattle

A nice entry of store cattle were forward this week, ahead of the prize show and sale in a fortnight. Steers sold to £970 for a 14-month-old British Blue from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal with Aberdeen Angus’ selling to £960 from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton.

Yearling British Blue steers from Orchard House Farm sold to £870. Other yearling steers sold to £860 for Hereford x and Aberdeen Angus from JE Harrison, Forton and other Aberdeen Angus’ achieving £850 from Low Borrowbridge Ltd, Tebay. Black and whites sold to £840 from AT Rogerson, Chipping.

Heifers sold to £870 for a yearling Limousin x from AT Rogerson, Chipping with British Blues to £850 from Orchard House Farm. An abundance of native bred heifers saw 14-month-old Aberdeen Angus selling to £790 from JE Harrison, Forton with others £720 to £780. Younger heifers were £660 to £720 for suckler bred sorts and dairy bred heifers were £620 - £700 depending on breed and quality

Beef Breeding

Just a single outfit forwards today, being a 1 year old Limousin x cow with a 3 week old Aberdeen Angus x bull calf at foot achieving £1200.

Pure bred Hereford bulls sold to £970.
