Prime Lambs

Lancaster Auction had a reduced entry of just over five hundred lambs forward this week. There was a very mixed entry in terms of quality with the buyers cautious of leaner lambs. An overall market average of 193p/kg with a SQQ average of 200p/kg, with the entry forward having in excess of 200 Mules and Horned lambs. Handy weighted Continental lambs continue to be the best to sell with them selling in excess of 200p/kg regularly and better bred ones often 215p/kg plus. Heavy weighted lambs this week sold to a sharper trade then the previous week.

Beltex lambs sold to a top of 244p/kg or £100 from Ian Richardson, Catforth purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers Lancaster. Other Beltex lambs sold to £99 or 236p/kg from Andrew Butler, Hambleton with Texel lambs selling to 232p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. It was the consignment from Andrew Butler that topped the market today selling Texel lambs to £103 with others from the same home selling to £99 twice and £95 twice. Other Texel lambs sold to £97 from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale weighing 45kg. The consignment from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston sold Charollais lambs to £101 weighing 45kgs and 45kg Texel lambs to £97 and £96.

The larger number of hill lambs saw Cheviots sell to £86 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof followed by £85.50 or 214p/kg from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Mule lambs topped at £90 weighing 47kg from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton with Mule lambs weighing the same selling to £89 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Horned lambs sold to £77.50.

Cast Sheep

A reduced entry of cast sheep were forward this week, in which more are needed each week at Lancaster. Once again a strong trade was enjoyed with strong Continental ewes once again selling in excess of the £100 mark. The consignment of Texel ewes from CD & HL Mason, Caton led the way selling to £112, £108 and £100. Texel tups sold to £94 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof.

Mule ewes sold into the seventies topping at £77 from CD & HL Mason, Caton with plenty of others in the early seventies. Upland ewes sold to a top of £80 from S Bosworth, Burnley with Herdwick ewes selling to £60 from the same home. Horned tups sold to £60 for Dalebreds and £58 for Rough Fells.
