Suffolk Sale
North West Auctions J36 held its Annual Sale of individual Suffolk females on behalf of the Suffolk Sheep Society. The sale had a strong catalogued entry of 88. This sale was held under Covid restrictions in which we thank our vendors and purchasers for being so understanding. A strong entry of over 60 Suffolk’s forward this year met a strong demand.
Gimmer lambs led the way this year with the much admired consignment from TA Blair of the Thornfleet flock topping the market. The gimmer lamb, Thornfleet CWC:20:00337 sired by Benrafton Barney Roy went on to sell for 850gns purchased by R Hiddleston of the Irongray flock. A Sitlow Evoque sired gimmer lamb, Thornfleet CWC:20:00327 from the same flock, went on to sell for 700gns, purchased by Richard Batty. All gimmer lambs forward averaged £442.50.
The in-lamb Suffolks were met by plenty of demand with purchasers in the market for all types of sheep forward. They peaked twice at 600gns. Firstly for Sullom FPT:15:00279 from G & K Richmond; this much admired ewe, carrying twins to Muirton One Direction. Also achieving this price was Forkins AOR:10:02111 carrying triplets to Errigal Equalizer, consigned by Richard Batty, Selside. This was closely followed by Urswick STX:18:00908 from J & C Airey scanned with twins to Urswick Rocket selling to 550gns. All in lamb Suffolk ewes forward averaged £428.
In-lamb Suffolk shearlings sold to 550gns from Richard Batty, Selside with a homebred gimmer shearling out of his renowned show ewe that had been very successful on the show circuit, carrying twins to Monkton Mentalist. This was followed by four gimmer shearlings achieving 500gns. Firstly achieved by S & C Walker with Oxbrukheys PZD:19:00182, then from R Hiddleston with Irongray PWC:19:00537 scanned with twins to Kinbally Crash Ball. At the same price was Urswick STX:19:01207 from J & C Airey scanned with twins to Birness Tyson and Sullom FPT:19:00166 from G & K Richmond scanned with twins to the new stock ram Claycrop. All in lamb Suffolk shearlings averaged £438.
Other Breeds
The multi-breed individual sheep sold to the strongest trade seen at this sale, Charollais females in particular in strong demand. The consignment of in-lamb gimmer shearlings from RJ & J Towers, Ingleton led the way, selling to 850gns and 800gns twice. These were all scanned in-lamb to the pedigree Beltex. Charollais ewes from the same home sold to 650gns. The consignment of pedigree Charollais ewes from local breeder, John Stott of the Kingsland flock, also enjoyed a successful evening. It was the pick of his consignment, Kingsland XJS01003 an aged ewe that led the way, scanned with twins, to their prize winning stock ram XNK182166 Tony, that sold to 680gns. Others from the same good home sold to 600gns.
The flock reduction of pedigree Texel ewes from Matthew Horner, Scorton sold to a top of 500gns. These ewes, sired by Eden Valley Young One was carrying a single to the Milnbank stock ram. All Texel in-lamb ewes forward averaged £415.
