Calves and Weanlings

Lancaster weekly sale of calves and weanlings had a smaller offering of 45 forward this week. It was a shame that there wasn’t more claves forward, new buyers were present today looking to purchase calves with some leaving empty handed. British Blue bull calves lead the way selling to £395 and £360 from I Atkinson and Son, Warton followed by £360 from TE & A Garth, Bleasdale and £355 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale, who also sold Angus bull calves to £370. Plenty more beef bull calves in excess of £300. British Blue heifer calves sold to £330 from GH Sanderson and Family, Catforth and £300 from TE & A Garth, Bleasdale with plenty more beef heifers in the mid to late two hundreds. Black and White bull calves sold to £100 and £90 from Karen Parkinson, out Rawcliffe with plenty of rearing calves selling in excess of the seventy pound mark.
A consignment of weanling Angus bulls from JK & B Birkett and Son, Morecambe sold to £505 and £480. A selection of stirks forward today from S Ashcroft, Euxton saw seven month old British Blue bullocks sell to £635 and Herefords to £565.

Store Cattle

Lancaster store sale had a reduced entry this week in which more were required to meet the increased demand from buyers with new and returning faces ringside. A better offering of store cattle this week was met with equally as good of trade with the £1400 barrier achieved and beyond today. Topping at £1440 was the consignment of Limousin bullocks from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland who also sold others to £1360. There was two consignments of British Blue bullocks selling to £1430 firstly for a pair from R & DM Rossall and Sons, Pilling and then a pair from A & V Wallbank and Son, Longridge. The consignment of bullocks from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse sold British Blues to £1390, Limousins to £1390, and £1380 with Hereford selling to £1310 and £1290. Angus bullocks from S Kellet and Sons, Pilling sold to £1380. Other noted prices for Limousins steers was £1310 from R & S Mitchell, Ellel. All bullocks forward averaged £1100.
Black and White bullocks sold to £1300 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with other Black and Whites selling to £1270 from WR Clarke, Pilling. The bull trade topped at £1160 for Montbeliarde from WR & CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh.
Angus heifers lead the ways this week from R Oldfield, Yealand Redmayne selling to £1240 with others selling to £1170 from G Atkinson and Son, Quernmore. British Blue heifers sold to £1210 from R & DM Rossall and Sons, Pilling.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle

Lancaster auction continues to boast one of the best Cast rings in the local area with a busy ring of active buyers purchasing on 24 different accounts. More cows each week are required to fulfil these orders. The 133 forward sold to a strong market average of 115p/kg to include a very large proportion of direct from the parlour cows.
The market was topped today by a young Limousin bull from Barlow Bros, Croston selling to 207.5p/kg or £1373. A Charolais stock bull sold to a top of £1400 from RA Clegg and LD Bennet, Seathwaite.
Young Limousin cows sold to 201.5p/kg from F &JM Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale with OTM heifers from the same home selling to 184.5p/kg and Herefords to 174.5p/kg. OTM Angus heifers sold to 194.5p/kg or £1264 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale closely followed by 184.5p/kg or £1156 from B Clark, Grange Over Sands. Beef OTM heifers well fleshed regularly selling in excess of 170p/kg. OTM dairy heifers sold to a top of 164.5p/kg or £1195 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.
Beef cows sold to a top of 144.5p/kg or £1090 for Limousin cows from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead with Simmental cows selling to £1100 from Barlow Bros, Croston. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1016 from J Bargh and Son, Morecambe. Better meated dairy cows regularly sold between 125-130p/kg.
