Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster saw an entry in excess of 200, once again. The quality on offer this week was very mixed with a large number of cattle sold individually. It is financially better to vendors to batch cattle as much as possible. Topping the market this week was a Shorthorn bullock from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead selling to £1350 with Limousin bullocks from the same home selling to £1300. Charolais peaked at £1310 for a pen of three from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet sold a pen of three Simmental to £1280, this was closely followed by a pen of five Limousin bullocks selling to £1260 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland, other Limousin bullocks sold to £1200 from DR Preston, Caton. Angus bullocks this week peaked at £1230 from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling followed by £1210 from Dave Vose Agri, Downholland and £1200 from R & E Ladds, Kendal.

The heifer trade peaked at £1250 for Angus’ from JB Moore, Grange over Sands. This was followed by Charolais to £1150 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Helsington who sold British Blue heifers to £1140. Other heifers that achieved to £1140 was a pen of four Limousins from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof.

Dairy bred cattle saw Montbeliardes sell to a top of £1160 form J Hesketh, Hutton with Black and Whites selling to £1060 for a pen of four from R & E Ladds.

All cattle forward at Lancaster today averaged in excess of £1000.

OTM Cattle

There was an increased entry of 126 Cast Cows forward at Lancaster today selling to a sharper trade for all specifications with, once again, a strong market average at Lancaster of 123.9p/kg achieved. Limousin OTM heifers sold to a top of 198.5p/kg or £1229 from JM & JJ Dawson, Little Dale. This was closely followed by Limousin heifers selling to 179.5p/kg from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Bullocks sold to a top of 177.5p/kg or £1136 for Limousins from JH Gardner, Pilling. Dairy heifers peaked at 159.5p/kg or £1047 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Beef cows topped at 149.5p/kg from J Drinkall, Anglezarke with an Angus who sold Shorthorn cows to 144.5p/kg. Other beef cows saw Angus’ sell to 147.5p/kg from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston, with Limousins to 144.5 from J & J Huck, Burneside. Beef cows topped at £1195 a head for Angus’ from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine.

Black and white cows sold to a top of 149.5p/kg from D & E Monk, Bispham with Montbeliardes to 137.5p/kg from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. Plenty of dairy cows sold around the 130p/kg mark. Dairy cows topped at £1089 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel who had others to £1047. Other noted Holstein Friesian prices being £1052 from ME & B Mason & Son, Tatham, £1047 from A Wilkinson, St Michaels, £1044 from MJ Fell, Whittingham, £1039 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale, £1036 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme and £1034 Lawson Farms, Cockerham.

Calves & Stirks

Lancaster Auction, once again, had a good offering of 66 calves this week with plenty of choice on offer suiting all buyers’ requirements. It was Limousin calve that twice topped the market this week, firstly from RE & P Miller, Barnacre and secondly for 1-month-old suckler calves from JM & JJ Dawson, Littledale. The consignment from the Miller’s also saw Limousin bull calves to £350 and heifers to £345. This week British Blues twice sold to £340 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and J & G Thornley, Roseacre. This was closely followed by H & C Pickervance, Kirkham selling to £335. Plenty of British Blue bulls sold in the early three hundred. British Blue heifers peaked at £320 from AD & R Milner, Claughton on Brock. Hereford bull calves twice sold to £320 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green and TM & M Kidd, Ellel who sold others to £300 and £290. Hereford heifers from the same home peaked at £285. Angus bull calves peaked at £290 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne followed by £285 from A Pickthall and £275 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead.

Black and white bull calves peaked at £60 from AW & AM Park & Sons.
