Store Cattle

Lancasters weekly sale of Store Cattle had a similar number of over 200 forward that saw trade remaining very buoyant considering the current climate we are experiencing. Leading the way was suckler bred Limousin bullocks from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale selling to £1250. The consignment of Limousin bullocks from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse sold to £1220 and £1210 with others Limousin bullocks to £1200 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Charolais bullocks sold to a top of £1190 from JH Gardner, Pilling. Native bullocks saw Angus’ sell to a top of £1230 from R & E Ladds, Kendal with other Angus bullocks to £1160 from S & J France, Over Wyresdale. This was closely followed by £1150 achieved by Angus bullocks from J & M Cockett, Ingleton, WG Farms, Cockerham, EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet, Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton and FJ & R Coar, Cow Ark. Plenty more pens of strong bullocks sold in excess of the £1100 mark.

The heifer trade was topped at £1130 from R & E Ladds, Kendal for Angus’ with other Angus heifers selling to £1120 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens and Hereford and Angus heifers to £1120 from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby. Continental heifers saw Limousins sell to £1120 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale.

Dairy bullocks saw Fleckviehs sell to £1090 from R Swarbrick, Inskip followed by black and white bullocks to £1060 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Montbeliarde heifers to £1060 from A & T Smith, Longridge.

All cattle forward this week averaged just short of the £1000 mark.

Cast Cows

There was 55 OTM and Cast Cows forward selling ten pence dearer on the week to an overall market average of 120p/kg. Leading the way this week was OTM Limousin steers from P & ME Higginson, Pilling selling to 177.5p/kg. This was closely followed by British Blue heifers to 174.5p/kg from JD, EM & JA Atkinson, Kendal. Plenty more cast heifers and steers sold in excess of 150/kg. Well-fleshed black and white heifers sold in the one forties. Cast cows saw Limousins sell to 144.5p/kg from E Tuer, Windermere with Limousin cows to 141.5p/kg from NJ & L Allan, Killington. British Blue cast cows sold to 141.5p/kg from JT & U Garth, Ellel with plenty and other beef cows selling in the late one thirties. Best black and white cows sold in the mid one twenties. Dairy cows topped at £1022 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale.

Black and white stock bulls topped at 129.5p/kg or £1011 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre.

Calves & Stirks

Business was booming again in the calf ring today with 94 forward, selling to a very strong trade. Leading the way was British Blue bulls selling to £405 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. This closely followed by the consignment from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton selling to £365 and £355, three times. Also achieving the £355, twice, mark was J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne. Angus bull calves peaked at £345 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping followed by £335 from Tom Barron Farms and Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Angus bull calves averaged £285, all British Blue bull calves averaged £258.

The heifer trade topped at £340 for British Blues from JP & C Robson, Garstang followed by £330 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and £325 from Tom Barron Farms. There were plenty more beef calves selling in the late two hundreds. Strong native heifer calves regularly selling in the mid two hundreds.

A good show of black and white claves forward this week which were met by an even stronger demand topping at £170 from AD & RL Milner, Claughton on Brock followed by £145 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons and £140 twice from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and Lawsons Farm Ltd. All black and white calves forward this week averaged £95.78.

Just a handful of stirks on offer this week saw Angus bullocks to £510 and heifers to £430.
