Lancaster Livestock Auction: Primestock - Monday 20th April

Spring Lambs

Lancaster had its largest entry of spring lambs so far this season with 89 forward selling to an overall market average of 242p/kg and an SQQ of 245p/kg. Leading the way this week was Texel lambs from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth selling to £132 or 307p/kg. This was followed by Texel lambs from S Blades selling to £120 or 286p/kg with other Texel lambs from the same home selling to £118 and Suffolks to £114. Also achieving £120 was PW & DW Roskell, Pilling with others selling to £115. Other notable prices for Texels was £118 achieved twice, firstly from G & D Ball, Little Eccleston and secondly from WN & D Smith & Sons.

Prime Hoggs

There was an increased entry of prime hoggs forward this week selling to an overall market average of 180p/kg with an SQQ average of 190p/kg. A large number of heavy weight and hill bred hoggs were forward on the market today. Our market average has very much been inline with the national average, there was a large number of heavy weight hoggs which met limited demand due to shortage of catering trade. Handy weight hoggs between 35-45kg were still in strong demand and very good to sell.

Leading the way this week was 50kg Texel hoggs from W & J Livesey selling to £114 with other hoggs from the consignment selling to £109 twice, £107 twice and £106. The consignment of Charollais and Bleu de Maine hoggs from T Taylor, Woodplumpton sold to £113 and £111 twice. Beltex hoggs sold to a top of 246p/kg from M & R Standham & Sons, Lancaster. Plenty of pens of handy weighted hoggs selling in excess of 210p/kg. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £89 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. Mule hoggs twice topped at £86 from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore and RG & H Prest, Roeburndale West.

Cast Sheep

There was a larger entry of cast ewes forward this week that sold to an easier trade with buyers very cautious of fat sheep. The market topped at £106 for Texel cast tups from W Barnes, Lancaster. Texel ewes topped at £106 from M & R Standham & Sons, Lancaster with Charollais ewes to £100 from G & H Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Plenty other Continental ewes sold around the £90 mark. Horned ewes topped at £66 from RW & FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore with Swaledale ewes to £60 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead.
