Store Cattle

There was an increased entry of Store Cattle forward this week that saw a better quality of cattle on offer. Continental cattle full of meat were a sharper trade with native cattle slightly easier. Charolais steers sold to £1220 and £1200 from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale and R & S Mitchell, Ellel. Shorthorn steers sold to £1210 and £1190 from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Hereford bullocks sold to £1150 from ID Bailey & Son, Catforth with Angus’ selling to £1110 from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall and £1100 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £1100 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley with others to £1080 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Heifers sold to a top of £1050 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell with Angus’ selling to £1000 from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall. Limousin heifers sold to £1000 from J & S Harvey, Claughton with British Blues also achieving £1000 from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Other Agnus heifers sold to £1000 from J Hesketh, Hutton. Dairy bullocks saw Fleckviehs sell to a top of £1060 from J Hartley & Sons, Westhouse with Friesians selling to £1020 from L Parsons & Sons with Muse Rhine Issel selling to £1020 from Barlow Bros, Croston.

OTM Cattle

There was a slightly increased entry of 126 cast cows forward selling to a market average of 104.5p/kg. There was a better show of cows on offer today with plainer cows a noticeably dearer trade which were, once again, met by a busy ring of buyers. Topping the market this week was an Angus cast steer selling to 177.5p/kg or £1100 from AT Burrow, Gressingham. Angus heifers sold to a top of 154.5p/kg from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Helsington. Limousin cast cows sold to a top of 149.5p/kg from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. There was plenty of Black and white OTM Heifers selling in the region of 140p/kg. There was plenty of beef cows selling in the mid one thirties. Dairy cows regularly sold around the 120p/kg mark. Beef gross sold to a top grossing price of £976 J Drinkall Ltd, Chorley.

Calves & Stirks

There was an entry of 65 calves this week which saw good quality beef calves sell in strong demand with smaller and younger types harder to place. Topping the market this week was TM Townley, Over Wyresdale with Charolais bull calves selling to £345. A consignment from British Blue calves from J & G Thornley, Kirkham saw bulls top at £340 and heifers to £305. Weaned Hereford bull calves topped at £340 from JR Newsham, Conder Green. A consignment of British Blue calves from RT Halhead, Cockerham saw bulls sell to £300 and £270, three times with heifers from the same home selling to £250. This was closely followed by J Hoggarth & Son Slyne selling to £280, twice, and £270 with other British Blue bull calves to £275 from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £275 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale with Limousin bull calves to £260 from JM & MH France.

Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £68 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale with others to £62 and £60 from RT Halhead, Cockerham.
