Store Cattle

There was a nice entry of cattle for the first sale in November with an abundance of buyers in attendance keen to secure stock with many leaving empty handed.

Suckled calves sold to £750 for a pen of 6 month old Charolais x steers from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with 8 month old Aberdeen Angus x steers achieving £695 from AD & S Milburn, Millom. Younger steers sold to £515 for 4 month old Charollais x from AD & S Milburn, Millom.

Suckler heifers sold to £620 for Charolais x from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with Simmental x achieving £595 from W Caley & Son, Windermere. Aberdeen Angus x heifers sold at £585 from AD & S Milburn, Millom with younger heifers £450 - £520.

Store cattle sold to £1000 for a Hereford x from JEW Wightman, Lupton. A run of 15 month old BRB x steers from PW & D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow sold at £850 also selling BRB x heifers to £850, with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £775 from TE & A Galbraith, Crooklands and Hereford x to £765 from JE Wightman, Lupton.

Beef Breeding Cattle


The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle saw a catalogued entry of over 50 head sell to a competitive crowd of buyers looking for replacement stock.

The dispersal sale of the Broad Heys herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus saw the stock bull Broadheys Jasper Eric sell at 1000gns, cows with calves sold to 850gns and bulling heifers to 760gns. Commercial cows and calves sold to £960 from D Pennellum , Kirkby in Furness with others £950 from AJ & SE Burrow, Milnthorpe.

Cull Cows/OTM


Cull cows saw a rise in trade with more needed to fill buyers demand.

Beef cows sold to 121p/kg for Limousin x from A Hodgson & Son, Ambleside with others at 119p/kg for BRB x from J & M Wilson, Selside. Beef cows today were predominantly medium types bought for further feeding.

Dairy cows sold to 124p/kg for a young FKV from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington with Holstein Friesians to 111p/kg from A & B Pickthall, Milnthorpe. Parlour type cows 90p/kg – 100p/kg with leaner types 70p/kg – 85p/kg.

Top grossing cow was a BRB x from J & M Wilson, Selside totalling £944 who sold others at £931.

OTM heifers sold to 179p/kg (£1046) for Hereford x from JE Wightman, Lupton with others 169p/kg (£1022) for a Beef Shorthorn from GA Lambert, Gatebeck. OTM steers topped at 174p/kg (£930) from JE Wightman, Lupton.

Several cull bulls were forward selling to 119p/kg from F & TE Park, Crook and £1098 from BJ & C Lowrey, Millom.

The next sale of store cattle, suckled calves and cull/OTM cattle is on Thursday 28th November. Entries for the catalogue close Wednesday 20th November.
