Lancaster Livestock Auction: Primestock & Sheep with Lambs

Spring Lambs

A larger entry of Spring Lambs forward today saw plenty of interest from a busy ringside of buyers. The trade topped today at £149 or 373p/kg for Texel Lambs from WA & LA Jenkinson, Stalmine. This was closely followed by Texel Lambs from the same good home selling to £139 or 348p/kg.

Dorset Lambs sold to a top of £125 from S Blades, Arkholme with Suffolks selling to the same price from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. There was an overall market average of 287p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

As seen at the end of the previous week, the edge was slightly off the Prime Hogg trade but Lancaster still had a strong average, finishing at 242p/kg.

Topping the trade today at £137 was Charollais Hoggs from RS & IM Kellet, Cockerham who also sold Charollais Hoggs to 291p/kg. Suffolk Hoggs sold to £134 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Plenty of pens of well-finished Suffolk and Continental Hoggs were still achieving over the £120 mark.

Hill Bred Hoggs saw Cheviot Hoggs sell to £117 or 260p/kg from AG Butler with Mule Hoggs selling to £116 from H Birkett & Son, Overton.

Horned Hoggs sold to a top of £101 or 246p/kg for Scotch Blackfaces from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday.

Cast Sheep

A few less Cast Ewes on offer this morning but they still saw plenty of trade.

The trade topped today at £147 for Texel Ewes from JK & BE Townley, Brookhouse. Texel Ewes sold to £125 from RS & IM Kellet, Cockerham.

Mule Ewes sold to £118 from PW & DW Roskell, Pilling with others to £111 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Plenty of Mule Ewes still sold around the £100 mark. Horned Sheep saw Swaledales sell to £69 from JA Simpson, Barnacre.

More Cast Ewes required to meet strong demand from buyers.

Breeding Sheep

The Annual Show of Shearlings & Ewes with Lambs at Foot was kindly sponsored by Farmgate Vets of Lancaster and judged by Alasdair Prickett.

First Prize in the Shearling Class was awarded to a pen of Texels with Twin Lambs at Foot selling to £200 from Myerscough College, Bilsborrow. First Prize Pen of Ewes was awarded to ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth selling to £185.

Topping the trade today saw Suffolk Ewes with strong Twin Lambs at Foot selling to £210 from ST Birkett, Carnforth, Texel Shearlings with Twin Lambs also sold to £210 and £205 from Messrs Young, Grange Over Sands.

Broken Mouthed Masham Ewes with Twins sold to £165 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

Shearlings with Single Lambs saw Texels sell to £138 from JW & SE Drinkwater, Quernmore closely followed by £135 from AG & GM Rawlinson, Killington.
