J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Sheep with Lambs & Primestock 17th April

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

There was the largest entry of sheep with lambs at foot to date this year. The trade was buoyant throughout with younger breeding sheep in very strong demand and more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendor. The sale included the annual show and sale of shearings and ewes with twin lambs at foot. Thanks must go to our judge Mr William Pye of Lancaster who we thank for his time and expertise. There was a great line up of sheep put before the judge who awarded the championship rosette to G & KM Atkinson, Colby with his pen of Five Mule Shearlings with Texel twin lambs, selling to £250 to the judge, with 2nd Prize Mule shearlings selling to £245. The reserve champion rosette went to the same good home for a pen of five Continental Shearlings with Texel twin lambs at foot, this later sold to the top price of the day of £255.

Two crop Mules which won the Ewe class sold to £230 from G & KM Atkinson with second prize from E Parker, Crag Bank selling to £228. Numerous pens of nice quality shearlings and 1 crop sheep with twin lambs at foot regularly sold in excess of £200. Older Ewes with strong lambs were easily selling in excess of £57 a life. Strong sheep with single lambs saw a Suffolk shearling and strong Texel lamb from Mrs Atkinson of Colby sell to £190 or £95 a life, with Mule Shearlings with singles selling to £160 from AT Threlkeld of Satterthwaite.

The first hoggs with lambs at foot on the market today saw Texel Hoggs with Beltex Lambs sell to £170 from P Cummings, Holme.

Spring Lambs

A similar number of spring lambs on the market today saw the edge slightly off this week, as seen with all Primes sheep throughout the Country at the start of this week. Topping the trade was J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake selling Charollais lambs to £135 or 270p/kg, also selling to 270p/kg was Dorset lambs from S Proctor, Selside.

Prime Hoggs
