J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle, Thursday 23rd January 2025.

FEEDING BULLS & STORE CATTLE

Up and up and up! An unstoppable cattle trade.
J36 held its fortnightly sale of store cattle, where yet another rise in trade was witnessed. Today’s sale also included the first special sale of bulls here at Kendal, which saw great success and will take place again on various sale dates throughout the year.
The bull section kicked the day off in spectacular style with eight month old British Blue bulls hitting £1800 from TW Gorst, Crook. The same good farming sold others to £1760 and £1700. Blonde bulls sold to £1680 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton Le Sands. Limousin bulls again from TW Gorst sold to £1620, while Charolais bulls topped at £1540 from J Miller, Claughton on Brock.
Store cattle was up on the fortnight for most types with especially the more weathered types selling like hot cakes. A Limousin from WJ&EC McKinney, Kirkby in Furness sold for £2280 and an 18 month old Charolais bullock hit £2090. Heifers today topped at £1900 from Messrs Clark & Johnson, Windermere. The same home sold others to £1700. Blonde heifers topped at £1770 from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere. British Blue heifers also topped at £1770, this time from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton.

CALVES TO £740

This Thursdays sale saw the opening of the new calf ring.
It saw 75 rearing calves go through, selling to a top of £740, this paid for a Charolais bull from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby others from this good home reached £680. Blonde bulls sold to £690 from R Heath, Bootle while British blue bulls sold to £640 from J & B Morley, Appleby. Younger British Blue bulls to £590 and £570 for 5 week olds from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. Native sired bulls sold to £430 for Aberdeen Angus at just 1 month old from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Black and white bulls reached £225 for 6 week old from DW & EA Cottam, New Hutton.
Heifer calves also good to sell, these t\opping at £520 for British Blue from J & B Morley, Appleby with others to £490 & £460 from the same home. Charolais to £400 for 1 month and 2 days old from Messrs Sowerby, Appley with British Blue to the same price from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Other 1 month old British Blues reached £390 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg whilst natives sold to £360 for Beef Shorthorn x from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth with 3 week old Limousin reached £300 from B & MJ Nelson, Milnthorpe.

STIRKS

The earlier start time of 10.15am for the fortnightly sale of stirks was well greeted by customers with several new buyers in attendance. The sale peaked at £1080 for a pair of seven month old Limousin cross steers from M&C Greenwood, Middleton. A consignment of six to seven month old Limousin cross steers from B Heys, Mosborough sold to £1040 for a ring full. Four other pen fulls from the same home all sold at £1000. Also achieving this price was a six month old Charolais cross from M&C Greenwood, Middleton. Other younger six to eight month old steers were regularly £850 to £950. Dairy bred steers sold to £670 for a pen full of five month old Aberdeen Angus cross from T Anson, Silsden with four months to £600 from Messrs Young, Lindale.
Heifers sold to £1130 for a trio of seven month old Limousin cross from B Heys, Mosborough with others at £1100 and £1030. Younger six to seven month old were £900 to £950. A ring full of ten month old Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from M&S Blease, Carnforth sold at £910 with others at £870. Younger dairy bred heifers sold to £740 for six month old Hereford cross from S Ashcroft, Exton who also sold British Blue cross at £640, with four month old native heifers selling to £470.
Bull stirks sold to £960 for a trio of nine month old Hereford cross from JE Atkinson, Nibthwaite. Five month old Charolais cross sold to £910 from R&BJ Cleasby, Ulverston with diary bred bulls selling to £780 from AT Bainbridge, Kirkby Stephen. Black and White bulls sold to £520 for three month olds from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

A bumper entry of 115 OTM were forward today, with all classes once again taking a lift.
Top pence per kilo was 264.5p/kg achieved three times, firstly for a Limousin cross from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness, PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow also achieving this price for a British Friesian, whilst other sucker bred cattle sold to the same price from J Twigge, Lindale. Well fleshed suckers were often 240p/kg and above. The best of the diary’s 215p/kg upwards, harder worked sorts were 195p/kg to 210p/kg.
Top grossing was a heavy weight Charolais from Thor Atkinson, Ulverston with this achieving £2247.27 (259.5p/kg), with Hereford to £2002.22 (239.5p/kg). Black and Whites sold to £1920.63 (219.5p/kg) from JE Read, Carnforth.
A cast bull from TM&D Crosthwaite equated to £1988.97.
