J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Prime Hoggs & Cast Ewes

PRIME HOGGS

An ease in trade and a weathered show of hoggs, sees a drop in the week at J36, In saying this the trade remains strong on the whole. Well fed sheep take less of a hit, with handy weight hoggs also continuing to be a very good trade. However the bottom end, out of specification and light hoggs were a bit back from seven days ago. Hoggs topped at £185 for a single from KE Richards & Son, Howgill while a pen of three from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet sold to £183. The mid 40kg to early 50kg hoggs were the best sheep to sell on the day. AG Butler, Hambleton sold a single 47kg hogg to 370.5p/kg, slightly heavier sheep from the same home sold to 350p/kg. 46kg Texels from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet hit 366.9p/kg. Good middle of the road hoggs also sold away nicely with a pen of three from Messrs Cornthwaite, Grange Over Sands making 347p/kg. 41kg sheep were regularly 335p/kg to 340p/kg, with both T&CM Kelsall, Chipping and MW&MR Black, Staveley reaching £140 for theirs.
Demand still remains strong for all types of sheep, with numbers sequinning to go scares.

CAST SHEEP

524 local farmer ewes continued to sell to the resent fast trade, as to be expected at NWA J36 with all sold averaging £117.22. Only a handful of pure bred ewes forward saw these selling to £232 for Texels from Miss S Jackson, Nook with Charollais to £210 from RJ Stott, Stainton. Other better end ewes were £190 to £205. The strongest first cross ewes sold to £180 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington with others £176 from H Pumphrey Armitage, Milnthorpe. Others were regularly £160 to £175, mediums £130 to £155 and better end leaner ewes £105 to £120. Cheviot Mules sold to £182 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside with others at £178 from WR Clarke & Partners, Carnforth with North County Mules to £182 from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Other stronger North Country Mules were £155 to £170, mediums £130 to £145 and better lighter weights £105 to £120. Pure hill ewes sold to £132 for a ring full from JR Whitton, Cartmel with Cheviot to £128 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook, Dalesbreds £128 from WI&AM Atkinson, Bleasdale and Swaledale’s £126 from Miss S Jackson, Nook and WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Other stronger hill ewes were regular £110 to £120 and medium £90 to £105. Lighter and leaner weight ewes of all breeds and classes were keenly competed for at £75 to £90, with only the very smallest less.
22 cull rams forward sold to £200 for Texels from R&E Ladds, Kendal with other continentals £195 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby and medium continental regularly £140 to £170. BFL sold to £195 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydale.
