Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auctions Weekly Sale of Calves, Store & OTM Cattle, Friday 24th January 2025

CALVES & STIRKS

Topping today’s sale was a Charolais heifer from H Morgan, Stalmine with this going onto sell for £680. Other heifers saw British Blues to £630 from IT Richardson, Catforth with Aberdeen Angus to £550 from the same home. Younger sorts saw Charolais to £405 from Wallbank Farms.
Bulls were a flyer, selling to £670 for Aberdeen Angus cross from IT Richardson, Catforth with other Aberdeen Angus to £620 from Wallbank Farms. Real young sorts sold to £375 for British Blues and £370 of Beef Shorthorn both from RT Halhead, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE – SOLD TO £2500

Stores carry momentum once again at Lancaster, with a ringside of buyers all keen for cattle. 40 cattle breaking the £2000 barrier today, with a top price of £2500 being achieved on four occasions.
First at £2500 was a pen of three dairy bred British Blue cross bullocks from J Lamb, Glasson with K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel selling British Blue cross to the same price. This home also produced a single Aberdeen Angus cross bullock to £2480 and a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross to £2420. Also at £2420 was a Limousin bullock from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead who’s run saw others to £2380. Black and white bullocks saw a pen of four from TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham reach £1620. Today’s bullock averaged a genuine £1824.50.
Heifers up a gear on last week, with this week’s toppers being a trio of Aberdeen Angus cross at £2180 from the run off K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. At £2000 was a cracker of a Limousin from Pilling Hall, Pilling. £1980 was achieving four times by TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe, R Capstick, Ingleton and a pair from A&MI Robinson, Orton. Charolais sold to £1960 for a pen of four from MJ Waller, Lupton. All heifers today averaging an unrivalled £1725.81.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

Lancasters weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a bumper entry of 125, selling to a pleasing average of 207p/kg.
OTM steers again topped the trade, from regular vendor O Butler, Esprick with Aberdeen Angus steers at £2321.25 or 339.5p/kg, with others from this same good home at £2220 or 329.5p/kg. Friesian steers from TM Gardner, Tatham achieved £1609 or 249.5p/kg.
A good number of OTM heifers in the market today, with the 40 heifer forward averaging 236.5p/kg. Topping at £2111.69 or 339.5p/kg for a Limousin from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. British Blues OTM heifers topped at £2092 or 359.5p/kg from JB Moore, Grange Over Sands who also had OTM Angus heifers at £2067 or 339.5p/kg. Friesian OTM heifers from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore sold to £1806 or 289.5p/kg, with others from the same good home at 294.5p/kg.
Trade continued into the OTM cows, with beef cows from JA&R Geldard & Son, Levens to £2019 or 284.2p/kg for a stabiliser, with other stabilisers from the same good home to £1926 or 249.5p/kg. The best black and white bred OTM cows saw RG&B Lewis, Carnforth to £1868 or 209.5p/kg. Other Friesian OTM cows from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel sold to £1778 or 274.5p/kg.
Next grade down Friesian cows sold to £1544 to 209.5p/kg from R&E Ladds, Scalthwaite, with others at £1512 or 207.5p/kg from JA&S Handley, Kendal.
More numbers required next week, with Lancaster able to accommodate large volumes of cast and OTM cattle.
