Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancasters Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 20th January 2025

Customers from throughout the northern counties jump on board the Monday morning sale at NWA Lancaster, with prices achieved sailing ahead of other local centres.

PRIME HOGGS

The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw a sharp rise in numbers forward, with several new vendors in attendance, attracted to this prompt efficient Monday morning sale. An overall SQQ of 334p/kg was achieved, for hoggs ranging from 34kg to 70kg. A larger number of heavy weight hoggs (52kg plus) were presented today, selling to a top of £197 for Texel cross from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth and Suffolk cross to £192 from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Other heavy weights were regularly £180 to £185. The best standard weight hoggs sold to £181 for Charollais cross from AG Butler, Hambleton with Beltex to £180 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green, Texels to £175 from KA Purtill, Wigan and £172 from J Twigge, Lindale. Well finished hoggs attracted the keenest buyer interest. Lighter weights sold to £161 for Beltex from KA Purtill, Wigan with others at £152 from J Bargh, Morecambe and £150 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £181 for a ring full of Cheviot Mules from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet with Mashams to £157 from T&D Wright, Wray and Cheviots to £146 from DR Preston, Caton.
Today’s sale peaked at 405p/kg for a Beltex cross from GR&A Foy, Conder Green closely followed by other at 398p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan, 395p/kg D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, 393p/kg AG Butler, Hambleton and 389p/kg J Twigge, Lindale. Endless pens of well bred and fed hoggs, in weight specification were 360p/kg to 380p/kg. Heavy weights sold to 366p/kg, again from KA Purtill, Wigan with others to 362p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Other heavy weights were 330p/kg to 345p/kg. Standard weights were generally selling at 350p/kg to 365p/kg. The best light weights sold to 395p/kg, with others 350p/kg to 380p/kg. Buyers competing throughout the sale for all classes and types.

CAST SHEEP

Perhaps a planer show of sheep today, producing at respectable average of £136. The strongest continental and cross bred ewes were £160 to £180, topping at £196 for a Texel from CD&HL Mason, Caton with others at £192 for a Texel cross from AJ Lyons, Ashton in Makerfield. Mules sold to £164, with other stronger end £145 to £158, with mediums £115 to £128. Hill ewes sold to £132 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. A ring full of Herdwicks sold to £126 from T&ME Longton & Son, Quernmore with Cheviots to £114 from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh.
