J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Annual Show & Sale of Continental Store Cattle. Sale of Calves, Stirks & OTM Cattle, Thursday 19th September 2024.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

81 calves and weanlings forward today at the Junction 36 fortnightly sale, British Blue calves continue to be easy to sell with these topping the calves at £545 for a 5 weeks old from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Langley Park Farms, Millom reached £535 and J&B Morley, Appleby topped at £500, eighteen British Blue bull calves averaged £425. Charolais sold to £470 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor and Aberdeen Angus to £410 from Langley Park Farms, Millom.
Heifer calves sold to £400 twice for British Blues from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton and J&B Morley, Appleby. Charolais heifers sold to £390 and Limousin to £375.
Weaned calves and stirks met a huge amount of interest, with these reaching £810 for a Limousin heifer from D Clapham, Bolton. Bulls sold to £750 for British Blues from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens and steers to £670 for four Aberdeen Angus from J Young, Lindale.

STORE CATTLES

Today’s sale including the autumn prize show and sale of store cattle, which saw a quality entry of cattle forward for which all vendors must be complimented. The pre sale show was judged by Mr G Greenwood, Guiseley who awarded the championship rosette to Messrs TA Chapman & Son for a Limousin steer. The reserve rosette was awarded to the same good home for a British Blue heifer. We would like to thank our show sponsors BB Dairies and North West Limousin for the continued support. Todays sale topped at £1780 for a Limousin steers from TA Chapman & Son, Heslington, closely followed by a Blonde cross and Aberdeen Angus from J Hayton & Son, Barrow in Furness at £1740 and £1730. Limousin cross steers from MA&JA Winn, Burneside were also at £1730. Other stronger steers were regularly £1500 to £1700. Steers in forward condition, ready for sheds were regularly £1450 to £1550, with younger yearlings generally £1050 to £1200.
Heifer sold to a top price of £1700 for an Aberdeen Angus from P Stephenson, Carmel with Charolais to £1680 from JM Haddow, Hincasheter. Limousin cross were £1670 from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite and British Blue cross £1650 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Other stronger end heifers were regularly £1400 to £1600, with a keen interest in the best sorts for future breeding. Nice farming heifers regularly £1220 to £1350, with yearlings £980 to £1000.
Store bulls sold to a top price of £1480 for a British Blue cross from J&T Hunter, Dent.
Evenly grouped batched of cattle met buyers’ approval, and vendors are encouraged to group cattle were possible.
The next sale of store cattle is on Thursday 3rd October, which will include the annual prize show and sale of 600 suckled calves followed by 200 store cattle.

OTM CATTLE

Numbers rising in every sale with 88 forward today, as farmers look to offload passengers ahead of lying in. The best beef cows sold to 229p/kg on three occasions, with other beef cows in forward condition 210p/kg to 220p/kg and those suitable for finishing 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Simmental achieving £1770, with other stronger end beef cows £1500 to £1700. Dairy cows were predominantly medium parlour types today, with these sorts 178p/kg to 185p/kg, learn parlour type 155p/kg to 175p/kg with the leanest and lighter weight 125p/kg to 150p/kg. Top grossing diary cows was a Norwegian Red and White to £1583, with other heavier diary cows £1100 to £1300.
Cull beef bulls sold to 224.5p/kg for a Limousin and £1953 for a Luing.
OTM heifers sold to 219.5p/kg and £1321 for a Holstein Friesian.
