Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Weekly Sale of Calves, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle, Friday 20th September 2024.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

Calves and weanlings at Lancaster once again saw a buoyant trade for all calves. Rearers topped at £600 for a British Blue bull from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with Aberdeen Angus to £555 from AW&AM Park, Ellel. Other British Blue bulls sold to £545 from V&EJ Chadwick, St Michaels. Heifer calves sold to £440 twice, firstly for a British Blue from J&G Thornley, Kirkham and secondly for an Aberdeen Angus from JS&KM Wilson, High House. V&EJ Chadwick sold a British Blue heifer to £395 and JP&C Robson, Claughton on Brock, hit £390 three times also for British Blues.
Weaned calves and stirks sold to £860 for British Blue heifers from JR Newsham, Conder Green with others in this section to £670.

STORE CATTLE

NWA Lancaster renowned weekly store cattle sale saw 280 go through the main ring, with trade very similar on the week. Smaller weathered cattle were slightly harder to place than previous weeks, with autumn fast up on us.
A highlight of the sale today would be P&R Galligan, Cheshire run of twenty five well farmed Charolais steers averaging £1894 and topping the sale at £1960 for a trio, with others from the same good home at £1940 and £1920. A tank of a beast from RH Dodgson, Carnforth sold to £1940 for an Aberdeen Angus, with other Angus steers from the same home to £1800. British Blue steers sold to £1880 for a pair from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang.
H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet with a pair of Charolais and TA Chapman, Helsington with a pair of Limousins both topped the store heifer trade at £1780. British Blues sold to £1660 from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1580 from CE&MA Hewitt, Forton. WT Eastham & Son, Goosnargh had Limousins to £1560.
Just a handful of store bulls in today which sold to £1140 for twelve month old Blondes from K Forrestt, West Houghton.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

Today’s OTM sale saw a distinctive lack of flesh, and this must be taken into account with the overall average of 165.6p/kg for 93 sold.
Just one cast bull in today from RG&L Holmes, Warton which saw a Simmental to 249.5p/kg or £1808.88.
Topping the OTM cows today was EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine to £1743 for a Shorthorn. Other beef bred OTM’s saw TA Chapman & Son, Helsington sell a Limousin to £1602, who also had top pence per kilo at 224.5p/kg, with others from the same home at 217.5p/kg also for Limousins. Aberdeen Angus OTM cows sold to 199.5p/kg from O Butler, Esprick. Friesian cows sold to £1395 from ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham, with others to 191.5p/kg from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal.
OTM heifers saw Aberdeen Angus to 239.5p/kg from O Butler, Esprick. Friesian heifers sold to 219.5p/kg twice from AT Burrow, Gressingham with WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet at the same price. All heifers forward averaged 188p/kg.
