J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: May Fair Day, Sale of Cattle and Hoggs with Lambs at Foot. Thursday 12th May 2022

Calves & Stirks
Quality calves once again sold to a premium with the consignment of British Blues from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth selling to £500 for bull calves with others at £400 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and B Mallinson & Son, Levens. Younger beef bulls sold to £350 from JS & I Wilson, Millom who sold others at £320. Younger 3 week old British Blue bulls sold to £360 from RJ & JA Clark, Endmoor with others at £255 from JS & I Wilson, Millom. Heifer calves sold to £440 and £430 twice for British Blue x from B Mallinson & Son, Levens with others at £405 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with young Limousin x selling to £225 from JS & I Wilson, Millom.
Native sired calves saw Aberdeen Angus x heifers from B Mallinson & Son, Levens sell at £340 with an entry of young Hereford x calves selling to £180 from Messrs Wilson, Grange Over Sands and £155 from TK Robinson & Sons, Old Hutton. Dairy bull calves sold to £215 for a Montbeliarde from JS & I Wilson, Millom with Fleckviehs selling to £145 from RG & J Clark, Endmoor. An entry of predominately younger Black and White bull calves sold to £88 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth.
The largest entry of stirks to date at the popular fortnightly sale saw a large crowd of local and travelled buyers in attendance. Steers sold to a top price of £920 for an eight month old Limousin x steer from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with Shorthorn steers from W & CW Dent, Kirkby Stephen selling at £870, British Blue x steers from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill sold at £760. Dairy bred steers sold to £520 for Holstein Friesians and Montbeliarde from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal. Heifer stirks topped this sale section today achieving £960 for a Limousin x from R &BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. A keen interest in British Blue x heifers this week saw G & SM Stephenson, Ravenstonedale selling at £780 with others at £760 from JW & J Collin, Barnard Castle. Other young heifers sold to £710 for Limousin x from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with British Blue x at £680 from C Dent, Penrith.
A large entry of bull stirks sold to £940 for a Charolais x from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with six month old Aberdeen Angus x selling at £880 from J & R Waller, Killington. Limousin and British Blue x from G & SM Stephenson, Ravenstonedale selling at £770. Dairy bulls sold to £560 for a six month old Fleckvieh from C Dent, Penrith who sold Montbeliardes and dairy Shorthorns at £485.

Beef Breeding
The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle saw a larger entry forward with buyer in attendance looking for all classes and types of beef breeding cattle. The sale commenced with breeding bulls which saw a top price of £3000 for a pedigree Charolais bull from D Cornall, Bleasdale. A pedigree Charolais heifer from Messrs Kelsall & Marsden, Goosnargh attracted many admirers with a final bid of £2600. Heifers with calves at foot sold to a top price of £2100 for a British Blue x heifer with Limousin x calf at foot from JT & J Kelsall, Clapham. A large entry of predominately older cows with calves at foot sold to £1480 for a British Blue x with Limousin x calf from JG & RM Hall, Richmond who sold others at £1420. Limousin x cows with Charolais x calf at foot sold to £1380 from HM Hodgson, New Hutton. In calf heifers sold to £1110 for Limousins in calf to the Limousin bull from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill.
The next sale of beef breeding cattle is on Thursday 20th May with include the much anticipated first sale of pedigree beef cattle.

Store Cattle
Store cattle achieved a top price of £1445 for British Blue x steers from KG &LM Park, Witherslack with Charolais and Simmental steers from G GU & D Swarbrick, Meathorp achieving £1360. OTM steers sold to a top price of £1320 again from KG & LM Park, Witherslack. Yearling steers sold to a keen interest peaking at £1005 for a ten month old Limousin x from T Ayrton & Sons , Lancaster who sold others at £1000. Others sold to £995 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. Native sired steers sold to a top price of £1285 for a Hereford x from JL Bird, Flookburgh with yearling beef Shorthorns from PJ & JB Wilson, Flookburgh selling at £1070 and Aberdeen Angus x at £1065 from MW & PA Rollason, Meathorp.
Store heifers sold to £1300 for British Blue x from KG & LM Park, Witherslack with Limousin x selling to £1130 from MW &MR Black, Staveley. Yearling heifers sold to £1095 for a Limousin x from JB & ND Baines, Eskdale with others at £1090 from F & JM Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale. Native sired heifers sold to £1120 for Hereford x from JL Bird, Flookburgh with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £1115 from JE Wightman, Lupton and £1100 from JT & A Armistead, Selside.
A small number of store bulls forward today saw a top price of £1225 for a Hereford from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaitre with yearling Limousin x bulls from JA Airey, Old Hutton and T Ayrton & Sons, Lancaster selling at £1085.

OTM / Cast Cattle
NWA J36 once again saw a fast and competitive trade for all classes and types of cull cows with an active ring side of eight buyers ensuring all vendors left well suited with prices achieved. The sale peaked at 224.5p/kg for a young Hereford x cows from JL Bird, Flookburgh closely followed by HE&M Henderson, Sedbergh selling a Limousin at 221.5p/kg with other Limousin x selling to 219.5p/kg from P&TL Edmondson Ltd, Kirkby in Furness. Heavy and well fleshed beef cows regularly sold at 195-210p/kg with beef cows suitable for further finishing 165-190p/kg.
Dairy cows today sold to a top price of 201.5p/kg for a Friesian from A&B Pickthall, Milnthorpe with Holstein Friesians selling to 194.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton and C Preston, Millom. Medium dairy cows were generally 155-165p/kg with leaner parlour types 135-145p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a Limousin from TJ&K Beaty, Troutbeck totalling £1674 with dairy cows selling to a top price of £1513 for a Holstein Friesian from RH&J Knowles, Bottle. OTM heifers today sold to a top price of 195.5p/kg and £1296 for a Holstein Friesians from AE&MK Hayhurst, Natland.
OTM steers sold to 189.5p/kg and £1108 for an Aberdeen Angus x from KG&LM Park, Witherslack. OTM bulls sold to 151.5p/kg and £1315 for a Galloway from JR Handley, Whinfell. All cull cows today averaged 179p/kg and £1106.

Great Annual Show & Sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot

A Successful Hoggs with lambs at foot day at J36 saw all specifications of hoggs in big demand and eagerly bid for. The pre sale show had a cracking entry forward with the quality on offer as good as can be seen in the North. Credit must go to our judges Chris & Elaine Dent, Barnard Castle for doing a tremendous job and we thank them for their time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of continental hoggs with Beltex lambs at foot from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet, this much admired pen of sheep went on to sell for £380 with the judges backing their own judgement purchasing the sheep. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Mule gimmer hoggs from G Sowerby & Son, Appleby. This powerful pen of 5 gimmer hoggs went on to sell for £300 with the judges once again backing their judgement. A special mention goes to all our sponsors today 1st Base Plant, Alistair Thompson Professional Sheep Services and Shorefields Equestrian & Smallholder Supplies.

Continental hoggs met a strong trade from start to finish with all outfits forward averaging £258.92. Taking top spot was the third prize pen of continental hoggs, these were a very shaping pen of Beltex hoggs with Beltex lambs selling to £395 from NL&C Brown, Claughton. Next at £390 was the second prize pen of continental hoggs from JH&JE Taylor, Ainstable. Other noted prices was £300 for a pen of Texel hoggs from G&KA Atkinson, Appleby.

Mule hoggs peaked £360 for the third prize pen from G Sowerby & Son, Appleby this powerful much admired pen going home with a regular buyer, this was closely followed by £330 for the second prize pen of Mule gimmer hoggs with Beltex lambs all purchased out of J36 consigned by JH&JE Taylor, Ainstable. Richard Batty, Selside saw his consignment peak at £300 with a consignment from AR Edmondson peaking at £270 with plenty of pens of strong Mule hoggs selling between £240-£260 with all Mule hoggs forward averaging £226.

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £230 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside.

A selection of dry hoggs forward from W&J Penny, Kirkby In Furness saw Texel hoggs to £128 & £122 with Masham hoggs selling to £125
