J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fell Pony Society Sale - Saturday 31st October

North West Auctions J36 held its annual Fell Pony Sale on behalf of the Fell Pony Society. A big thank you must go to all vendors and purchasers for being so understanding in these peculiar times and working with us and our Covid 19 restrictions. The sale was deemed a great success and thanks must go to all those involved.

The popularity of Fell ponies continues to grow with the strongest prices achieved for many years and very impressive market averages. The sale commenced with Class 1 for ponies 4 years and over and leading the way at 3700gns was Lot 5 Townend Oran from Mrs E Robinson, Penrith; a much admired black mare who had competed at Le Trec at a national level and who now travels all the way to Nairn, Inverness.

Also in this section selling to 2000gns was the licenced stallion, Holling Brown Ale from Ann Hool, Carlisle. The consignment from Mr and Mrs R Sutcliffe, Darwen sold Darrenvale Black Velvet to 1750gns and at 1700gns was Darrenvale Patience.

Class 2 for ponies 1, 2 and 3 years old sold to a top of 2000gns from Mr R Alderson, Kirkby Stephen with Meadowpark Michelle, full of Murthwaite and Greenholme breeding and one of very few left sired by Murthwaite Michael and Greenholme Morgan sold to 1200gns from Miss Helen Wilson, Newbiggin on Lune.

Class 3 for colt and filly foals saw the strongest demand for many years with all being eagerly bid for and virtually a 100% clearance. Leading the way was the annual consignment from the Potter family of the Greenholme Stud, Tebay. The much admired grey colt, Greenholme Olaf, sired by Greenholme Diego sold for 2200gns and goes to Staffordshire. Also from the same home was Greenholme Ozzy selling to 1300gns. Fillies from this renowned stud sold to 1100gns three times. Firstly for Greenholme Orrianna, Greenholme Onyx and Greenholme Orient.

The consignment of foals from Bert Morland of the Lunesdale Stud all of which were fillies sired by Lunesdale Union Jack and saw Lunesdale Briony II sell to 1900gns, Lunesdale Bronte sold to 1600gns, Lunesdale Bramble 1500gns and Lunesdale Bethan 1000gns. At 1400gns was LLanarchbrook Liberty Faith from Mrs H Wendon, Ross on Wye. This filly foal being sired by Murthwaite Boy Blue II.
