J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 19th May

Spring Lambs

There was an increased entry of 744 Spring Lambs selling to, once again, a strong trade at J36 with outlets for all types of lambs. The sale topped at £140 for Texel lambs J & G Geldard, Foulshaw closely followed by heavy Texel lambs selling to £139 from WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale. Beltex lambs continue to sell to competitive trade topping at £132 from PA & D Slater, Garstang with others to £131 from FE & CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands. A top pence per kilo of 317p/kg was achieved for Beltex lambs from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor with many consignments of Beltex selling around the 310-315p/kg mark.

Heavy weighted lambs sold to £135 for Texels weighing 48kg from J Burr, Quernmore with Suffolks to £133 from D Metcalfe, Dalton in Furness. Light meated lambs were the trade of the day topping £113 twice firstly for 37kg Beltex lambs from C Bousfield & Sons, Appleby and secondly for 38kg Texels from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday. Lambs weighing between 34-38kg averaging 268p/kg.

There was an overall market average of 266p/kg and an SQQ of 268p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

Well-meated hoggs met a fast trade this afternoon at J36, which saw an entry of 518. A wonderful run of 150 hoggs from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston topped at £112 for a pen of Texels with others from the same home selling to £111. Heavy meated hoggs were in demand selling to £109 for Texel hoggs from EJ Burrow, Storth with Mules to £102 from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington. Swaledales topped at £97 from GM & A Jackson. A run of well-meated hoggs from SH & PI Bowes, Stainton topped the pence per kilo at 258p/kg.

All hoggs forward averaged 217p/kg with an SQQ of 223p/kg achieved.

Cast Ewes

There was a smaller entry of cast sheep with 370 on offer with lean and fit sheep selling to a great demand with buyers caution of over fat ewes. Many pens were still selling over £100 today topping at £110 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Suffolk ewes topped at £96 from J & L Bird, Grange over Sands with Cheviot Mules sold to £90 from SP Pease, Kirkby Lonsdale. A run of strong Mule ewes from J Twigge, Grange over Sands topped at £85 with others to £83 from R Greenwood, Warton. Swaledale ewes were in demand today with strong fit ewes selling to £75 from PW Clarke, Crossthwaite with others to £73 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Rough Fell ewes topped at £72 from CP Bateman, Docker. Cheviot ewes sold to £78 from Thrimby Farms, Penrith. Fit Herdwick ewes sold to £62 from MR Toms, Langdale.
