J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Sheep & Lambs - Thursday 21st May

There was an entry of 536 forward at the fortnightly sale at J36 consisting of 242 Hoggs with Lambs, 37 Shearlings with Lambs and 257 Ewes with Lambs.

The trade was just as buoyant as the first sale with vendors well satisfied. The hogg section was topped by Texels with Beltex lambs twice selling to £220 from JC & E Pedley & Sons, Sedbergh. This was closely followed by G & KM Atkinson, Colby selling Texel hoggs with Texel lambs to £205. Mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £200 and £190 from G Sowerby, Appleby. There were all types of Continental hoggs forward which averaged £185 an outfit with all Mule hoggs forward averaging £166 an outfit. These are strong averages considering for the mixed quality on offer today, but all types eagerly bid for.

The shearling trade was strong today topping at £212 for North County Mules with twin Texel lambs from WH & G Hodgson, Patton. This was closely followed by Rough Fell and Scotch Mules selling to £210 twice from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with North of England Mules selling to £202 and £200. Mule shearlings with singles topped at £172 from the same home.

The trade for ewes with lambs at foot continues to be very strong with a broad spectrum of lowland to upland sheep on offer. The market topped at £220 for aged Continental ewes with twin Beltex lambs at foot from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell. This was closely followed by Continental ewes with twin Texel lambs selling to £212 from JC Dunning, Orton. There was plenty of strong Continental ewes with strong twin lambs selling around the £200 mark. Continental ewes with strong single Suffolk lambs peaked at £202 from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite. Aged Mule ewes with twin lambs peaked at £182 from AT Threlkeld with other aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs to £180 from JC Dunning. Aged Cheviot ewes with twin Beltex lambs topped at £178 from GJ & CA Pennellum, Thwaites with Cheviot ewes with twin lambs regularly selling around the £170 mark. Aged and broken mouthed Herdwick ewes suckling twin Continental lambs sold to a top of £130 from Kirkby & Longworth, Ulpha with singles from the same home selling to £88 and £85.

The next sale of sheep with lambs at foot will be Thursday 4th June, entries close Wednesday 27th May.
