Breeding Sheep

The weekly sale of Sheep with lambs at foot had an entry of 70 families or 192 lives forward selling to a sharper trade than the previous week with more young lambs on offer this week. The trade peaked at £245 for Beltex ewes with twin Beltex lambs at foot from A Brown, Carnforth who sold Beltex shearlings with Beltex twin lambs to £240. Beltex ewes with single Beltex lambs from the Browns, once again, sold to £225 and £220. Suffolk ewes with single Suffolk lambs at foot sold to £240 from OR Hodgson, Old Hutton with Suffolk ewes and twins from the same home to £238.

Masham ewes with Continental twin lambs at foot sold to £192 from T Ellis, New Hutton. Aged Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs at foot sold to £190 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands followed by £188 from CD Slinger & LJ Eaton, Sedbergh. The was an overall market average of £64.48 a life.

Spring Lamb

The first spring lamb of the season was forward today from Ben Harrison, Staveley who sold a Suffolk lamb weighing 42kg to £122 or 290p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

A bumper entry of 1372 prime hoggs were forward this week selling to a strong trade, as seen nationwide, selling to an overall market average 251p/kg for a very upland show of hoggs.

The market topped at £164 for a 68kg Charollais hogg from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake followed by £161 for Suffolks from E Needham, Stainton. Texel hoggs sold to £149 from James Sanderson, Halton with others to £148 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Beltex hoggs sold to £146 from W & J Livesey, Preston with Texels from the same home selling to £140 twice. A large number of Continental and Suffolk heavy weight hoggs sold into £130 and £140s. Cheviot hoggs twice sold to a top of £128 from O Butler, Kirkham.

Texels sold to a top of 293p/kg and 292p/kg from MW & MR Black, Staveley with the consignment from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside selling to 292p/kg and 287p/kg for Betlex x. Texels from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal sold to 291p/kg and 290p/kg.

Mule hoggs peaked at £127 for a pen of 31 weighing 51kg from M & YS Barker, Halton with plenty more pens of Mule hoggs selling in the late teens. Horned hoggs peaked at £127 for Rough Fell hoggs from Amy Harrison, Kentmere closely followed by £125 for Whitefaced Woodlands from PJ Onions, Arkholme and Lonks peaking at £119 from GJ Ibbetson, Roeburndale. Scottish Blackface hoggs sold to £111.50 and £110 weighing 42kg from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday. Swaledale and Dalesbred both peaked at £111 from WI & A Atkinson, Bleasdale.

Cast Ewes

A bumper entry of ewes on offer today met a roaring trade to level at £101.73. Taking into consideration that 45.66% of todays entry were hill type sheep.

Top price today were Texels from AW Crowe, Witherslack selling to £227. AJ Bateman sold Texels to £192 and WS Burrow & Sons sold Texels to £186 with Richard Wilson selling to £185. Richard Wilson also sold Suffolks to £198 and S Procter sold Suffolks to £180 and AT Threlkeld sold to £179.

Mules were a terrific trade with Messrs Pearson & Jackson selling to £163, Mr G Riley selling to £161 and AW Crowe to £160. A grand show of Swaledales sold well with Messrs JJ & J Towers selling to £130 and Messrs KM & KJ Curwen selling to £120. Staying with the hill ewes and Rough Fells had a great day with G & ID Postlethwaite selling to £148 and S & A Bland selling to £146. Cheviots sold to £126 from HR & KA Hodgson and £123 from LA & M Lambert. Scottish Blackface sold to £110 from MW Parsley. Herdwicks from AT Threlkeld sold to £94 an £86 from Antony Hartley.

Bluefaced Leicester ewes from RI Dixon sold to £183.

A decent entry of cast rams saw a storming trade for Suffolks from T Parkin sold to £205, Leicesters from R Lawrence sold to £195 with MR Toms sold to £180. Texels from AW Crowe sold to £190. Charollais from WS Burrow & Sons sold to £157. Cheviots from KM & KJ Curwen sold to £130 with Whitefaced Woodlands from PJ Onions selling to £151 and £142. Herdwick tups from JD Benson sold to £113. Beltex tups from EI, EA & TW Wilson sold to £146.
