J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 19th March

Calves

There was a bumper entry of 97 calves and weanlings forward this week. Weaned British Blue heifer calves topped the market at £395 from Colby Farms, Appleby with Hereford bull calves from the same home to £380. Saler Bull calves also from Colby Farms peaked at £380. British Bull calves were selling between £250 and £300. HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick run of Blue Bulls peaked at £295. DW Cottam, New Hutton twice sold Blue Bulls to £270. Angus weaned bull calves sold to a top of £310 from MA & S Johns, Brough. Hereford bulls at a month old sold to £210 from Lawkland Hall Farms. Heifers were a considerably sharper trade today with British Blues selling between £220 and £270. Today’s trade peaked at £295 from HJ Robinson & Son, with others to £280 from Messrs Sowerby Drybeck. TK Robinson & Sons, Old Hutton Limousin heifers sold to a top of £250. Weaned Angus heifers from MA & S Johns peaked at £295.

Black and White sold to a sharp trade, weaned calves sold to a top of £215 from MA & S Johns, with others to £140 from AE & MK Hayhurst, Natland. Medium types sold between £60 and £80 with a top of £95 from JAH Walton & Son, Kirkby Stephen.

A run of Montbeliarde bull calves from Colby Farms were well sold peaking at £155 with others to £145.

A few stirks about this morning sold to another strong trade at J36. Angus bullocks at 6 months old sold to £600 from Colby Farms with Limousins to £520 from HM Hodgson, New Hutton.

Cast Cows

The fortnightly sale of cull cows saw an entry of 48 forward selling to a market average of 119p/kg achieved for all sold.

Beef bred cows sold to 145p/kg for a Shorthorn x from K Wrathall Ltd, Seathwaite who sold Limousin x at 141p/kg. Other beef cows for further feeding were generally were 125p/kg to 140p/kg. Top grossing beef cow sold to £955 from K Wrathall Ltd for a Holstein Friesian from JJ & MA Park & Son, Kendal with other heavy and well-fleshed cows 115p/kg to 122p/kg, mediums 102p/kg to 112p/kg with parlour type cows generally 90p/kg to 100p/kg. Top-grossing cow of the day £975 from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith.

OTM heifers sold to 174p/kg and £1158 for British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton with OTM dairy heifers selling to 141p/kg for Fleckviehs from R & J Dodgson, Natland and £802 for Holstein Friesians from R Morris–Eyton & Son, Whicham.

Several cull bulls forward sold to 141p/kg for a Limousin x JE Wightman, Lupton and £1170 for an Aberdeen Angus from HMP Wymott, Preston.

A Hereford x steer sold at 171p/kg and £1349 from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham.

Store Cattle

The fortnightly sale of store cattle saw another strong trade for all classes and types with buyer’s keen to secure stock and fill orders.

Steers sold to £1120 for a 13 month old Limousin x from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Strong steers regularly £1000+ with well-grown suckler bred yearlings were £900+. Younger sucklers £750 to £800.

Native bred steers sold to £990 for Hereford x from MJ Waller, Lupton with Aberdeen Angus x £950 from R Morris Eyton & Son, Whicham. Younger steers for grazing £760 - £900.

Dairy bred steers sold to £820 for Holstein Friesian from JA & J Harper, Sedbergh with others £780 from RJ & R Holden.

Heifers sold to £1010 for Aberdeen Angus x from S & M Cooper, Leece with others £900 - £1000. Younger sucklers £680 - £750.

A nice entry of bulls sold to £890 for Limousin x from M & G German with others £840 from NJ Strickland & Son Whinfell. Younger bulls £610 -£750.
