Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an entry of 1164 selling to an overall market average of 158p/kg. As requested, best lambs to sell were 44kg plus well-fleshed Continental and Suffolk lambs. Top price per head was for heavy weight Suffolks from T Parkin, Sedbergh selling to £83. Texel lambs twice sold to a top of £82 from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook and W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Others sold to £81 from AW Irvine, Ambleside. Beltex lambs topped at £80.50 from Jack Turnbull, Grange-over-Sands purchased by Dales Traditional Butchers, Kirkby Lonsdale. Plenty more of them well-meated heavy weight lambs sold in the mid to late seventies. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 189p/kg from TL & S Cross, Carnforth and 180p/kg from C Jackson, Ingleton. Mules sold to a top of £71 and £70 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Grassy, lean types of lambs were hard to place today and possibly worth more in the store market.

Cast Sheep

There was an entry of 400 cast sheep forward which sold to a similar trade. Topping the market at £114 was Cast Texel rams from R Cowin & Sons, Kirkby Lonsdale. Texel ewes sold to a top of £85 from M Archer & Son, Bolton-le-Sands with other strong sheep regularly selling in the seventies. Mule ewes sold to a top of £65 from J, CH & JG Bland, Silverdale. Other pens of strong Mule ewes sold into the sixties. Horned sheep saw Swaledale rams top at £60 from E & K Bland, Tebay who sold Rough Fell ewes to £58. There was a larger quantity of leaner sheep on the market today which were eagerly bid for.
