J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 8th January

Pigs

The opening pig sale of 2019 saw 106 forward comprising of 49 prime, 4 cull sows and 53 weaners. Prime pigs sold to £98 for Duroc x gilts from J Stott with Pietrain x hogs selling to £95 from JR Corlett. Hevay well-bred pigs (90kg to 110kg) were easiest sold and they were generally achieving 90p/kg to 100p/kg. Gilts and hoggs attracted a premium over boars. Lighter, leaner pigs were selling between £48 and £70 depending on breed. Sows sold to £60 with most going for further feeding. Weaners topped at £37 for gilts from R Holland with others selling to £24. Youngest weaners were generally £12 to £20 depending on breed and quality.

Prime Hoggs

One of the largest entries of Prime Sheep for several months were forward at J36 on Tuesday 8th January with 2038 sold. There was an overall market average of 200p/kg achieved with buyers competing for types and classes. The sale peaked at £107 for Texel x from JB Airey, Kendal with other heavyweight lambs achieving £100 to £106. A wonderful run of Beltex x hoggs from KJ Knight, Kirkby-in-Furness topped at £106 and averaged £98 for fifty sold. Well-finished hoggs sold to a premium topping at 248p/kg for Beltex x from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor, others were generally 210p/kg to 235p/kg. Standard weight lambs (39-45kg) sold to £103 for Charollais x from JA & R Geldard, Levens with others selling between £82 and £90. Hill bred lambs sold to £82 for Swaledales from T Longton & Son, Cheviots achieved £81 from RW Nicholson with Rough Fells selling to £80. Light weight hoggs were keenly competed for selling to 220p/kg from D & DW Prickett, Farleton and £66 for Dalesbred from R Capstick & Son.

Cast Sheep

There was an entry of 787 Cull Sheep were a stronger trade with everything £8 to £10 up on the week. The sale topped at £166 for a Texel ewe from PK & R Woof, Stainton, with other heavy pure bred ewes selling to £130 to £155.

Mules sold to £90 from KR & C Williamson, Kirkby Lonsdale with other heavy Mules regularly selling between £70 and £80. Hill ewes sold to £79 for Cheviots, Swaledales sold to £60, Rough Fells sold to £57 and Dalesbred sold to £54. All ewes averaged £51.33 with a large proportion of horned and hill ewes forward with these achieving £25 to £40 depending on their size and finish.

52 Cull Rams sold to £114 for a Charollais from Messrs Clegg & Bennet, with other heavy rams selling between £95 and £110. Bluefaced Leicester sold to £93 from TW & C Shepherd, Rough Fells sold to £70, Swaledales sold to £67 and Herdwicks sold to £52. Cull rams averaged £67.94.
