Prime Hoggs
The opening sale of 2019 saw a good entry of Prime Hoggs forward which sold to an overall market average of 195p/kg. Well-bred heavy hoggs sold to the top price of £113 achieved by AG Butler, Hambleton for Charollais x, with others selling to £111 for Beltex x from AT Alcock, Inskip. Medium hoggs, 39-45kg, sold to £100 for Beltex x from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with other first cross hoggs selling to £92 to £97. Mules sold to £84. Light weight hoggs were easily sold topping at £85 from Bargh Contractors, Morecambe with other well-bred sorts selling between £78 and £82.
Hill bred hoggs sold to £92 for Cheviots from TR Prickett with Scotch Blackface selling to £75 from WM Pye and Swaledale sold to £68 from T Ayrton & Son.
Top price per kilo this week was 238p/kg for Beltex x hoggs from TR Prickett, well-finished hoggs sold to 200p/kg to 215p/kg depending on breed with first cross selling to 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Light weight hoggs were keenly bid for with all sold averaging 201p/kg.
A full ring of buyers were ringside today keen to purchase all classes of hoggs. More hoggs and ewes could have easily of been sold to the vendors advantage and we encourage vendors to contact the office advising of entries to next Monday to help when contacting buyers. Cast Sheep
There was a few more cast ewes forward today with vendors cleaning out before lambing season starts.
Heavy ewes were on short supply with Texels from GR & RA Surtees achieving £109 and Suffolks to £104 from TA Blair. Medium ewes sold between £68 and £80 depending on breed, with smaller meated sorts selling £52 to £65. Mule ewes sold to £64 with others generally £50 to £60.
Several Rams forward sold to £124 for Texels.
