Prime Hoggs

An entry of just short of 1000 hoggs sold to a slightly easier trade than the previous week, but there was a strong trade on the day in comparison to other local markets. There was an overall market average of 188p/kg with an SQQ average of 194p/kg. Once again, handy weight hoggs were in strongest demand and easiest to sell. The trade was topped by JG Harryman, Hawkshead with 56kg Texels selling to £109 this was closely followed by 55kg Texels from R Capstrick & Son, Ingleton selling to £107. Beltex hoggs sold to a top of 242p/kg or £102 from JG Harryman. This was closely followed by Wannops Farm Ltd, Heaton with Oxcliffe selling their consignment to 235p/kg, 231p/kg or £99.50. Plenty of Beltex hoggs sold into the early 220p/kg mark. There was plenty of Texel hoggs around the 40kg mark easily selling around 200p/kg and above. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £85 from JG Harryman with others to £81.50 from SJ Middleton, Dent. Horned hoggs saw Scotch Blackfaces sell to £79.50 from S & M Cooper, Leece.

Cast Sheep

It was great to have the normal ewe numbers this week with 591 forward selling to a sharper trade for all types of ewes, in which more could have been sold. Topping the trade today was Beltex tups from Wannops Farm Ltd, Heaton with Oxcliffe with ewes from the same good home selling to £108 for Beltexs. Charollais ewes sold to top of £107 from R Gibson & Son, Kendal. Other Charollais ewes sold to £102 from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Other leading Texel ewe prices were £105 from JM Case & Son, Ulverston, with Beltexs to £100 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. Plenty of pens of Continental Sheep selling in the nineties. A stronger cast tup trade today saw Leicester tups sell to £97 from WM & JE Shuttleworth, Barbon and horned tups to £75 for Rough Fells from I Carradice, Tebay. Mule ewes were noticeable dearer today selling to £73 from TH Garnett & Son, Barrow-in-Furness with a pen of 48 Mule ewes from Wannop Farms selling to £72. Plenty of strong Mule ewes sold around the £70 mark. All types of hill bred ewes were a nearer trade. Cheviots topped at £76 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with horned ewes topping at £70 for Lonks from Wannops Farm. Swaledale ewes topped at £64 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. Plenty of pens of big fit horned ewes selling easily into the mid-fifties. Leaner types of ewes sold pounds dearer today.
