Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of prime lambs had a larger entry forward with a 1000 going through the ring with an overall market average of 160p/kg with an SQQ average of 165p/kg with more hill bred lambs forward this week. Texel lambs sold to a top of £92 from TS & SM Park, Millom with Beltex lambs selling to £90.50 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £86.50 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. It was great having plenty of lambs selling in and around the early eighties. Mule lambs topped the trade at £75.50 from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Top pence per kilo today went to P & TL Edmondson, Kirkby-in-Furness selling Beltexs to 209p/kg, closely followed by 205p/kg from JG & PH Thompson again for Beltex lambs.

Cast Sheep

There was, once again, an entry in excess of 600 ewes forward today which saw the trade slightly sharper especially for fleshed ewes. Topping the trade today was Beltex ewes from CM Jennings, Selside with other Beltex ewes selling to £105 from LM & C Whitaker, Kirkby-in-Furness. Texel ewes sold to a top of £108 from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack with other Texel ewes to £106 from TS & SM Park, Millom. Cast rams sold to a top of £111 from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon for a Charollais. There was plenty of strong Continental ewes selling either side of the ninety pound mark. Leicester ewes topped at £83 from B & HM Wilson, Selside this was closely followed by £82 from A Dixon & Son, Selside. Mule ewes sold to a top of £70 from DW Cottam, New Hutton with fit Mule ewes regularly selling the sixty pound mark. Horned ewes sold to a top of £59 for Rough Fells from Mrs E Murdock, Kendal, this was followed by £57 from Fishwick Brothers, Longsleddale. Dales bred ewes topped at £51 from R Capstrick & Son, Ingleton. Swaledale ewes sold to £37 three times.
