Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 2nd November

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had an entry of 382 forward for the sale wit another competitive trade enjoyed at Lancaster. Large short keep cattle sold to, once again, a very competitive trade with longer keep cattle slightly harder to place this week with more of these on the market and many sheds currently full as many now lying their cattle for winter following the prolonged Autumn.

The trade topped at £1380, three times, firstly from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley for British Blue Steers and second from A &E Clarkson, Thurnham for an Aberdeen Angus Steer. This was closely followed by J & JM Walmsley, Pilling selling Angus Steers to £1360. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1300 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland.

The heifer trade today was topped by a British Blue from P Lawrenson & Son, selling to £1170 with Angus heifers from J Tattersall, Leyland selling Angus’ to £1090.

OTM Cattle

A larger entry of OTM Cattle this week saw a very ‘back end’ show of cattle with a lot of lean cows forward with many off loading before the winter months. The large quantity of cows forward everywhere with many slaughter houses nearly full meaning the trade remained very similar with Lancaster, once again, offering a very competitive ringside of buyers to ensure that all specification of cows were well bid for.

Top price per kilo today was 181.5p/kg which was achieved by P & A Bell, Pilling for a Hereford Heifer. British Blue cows sold to 149.5p/kg from RJ Cardwell, Esprick closely followed by other beef cows selling in the 140p/kg mark.

Young dairy cows sold to a top of 139.5p/kg with plenty of fit cows selling around the 120p/kg mark.

There was an overall market average just over 100p/kg.

Top price per head was £1215 for a Charolais Bull from P & SA Edmondson, Stainton.

Calves and Stirks

A few less calves on offer this but there was still a good entry of 40 forward which sold another good trade at Lancaster especially following on from market reports of other local centres, vendors are strongly urged to market their calves at Lancaster. The trade was topped at £395 and £390 for British Blue bull calves from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with plenty of British Blue bulls selling in excess of the £300 mark. British Blue heifers topped £270 from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. A larger quantity of young beef calves on the market today saw Angus bull calves sell to £225 from T & EA Garth, Bleasdale.

Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £95 from Drinkall Brothers of Over Wyresdale and more black and white rearing calves were required today to meet the demand from buyers present.

Store Lambs

The fortnightly sale of Store Lambs had an entry of in excess of 100 forward for the sale with a variety of size forward which saw the trade top at £61.50 for Texel lambs from CM & CA Jackson, Caton.
