Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The first sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot at Junction 36 this week enjoyed a steady trade in line with the current weather and grazing conditions. Topping the day’s trade was a Pure Texel ewe with Charollais x Texel Twin Lambs at Foot from RJ Willison of Levens selling to £200, followed by T Ellis of New Hutton with a pen of 3 Continental Ewes with Texel Lambs selling to £192 per family. Mule Ewes with Lambs at foot sold to £175 three times from T Ellis of New Hutton, NJ Strickland & Son from Whinfell and TW Gorst of Crook. All Ewes with Lambs at foot sold to an average of £144.97 which included a show of mainly broken mouthed ewes.

Prime Hoggs

A mixed entry of hoggs was seen in J36 today with a similar number forward to last week. Vendors seen to be taking advantage of the good trade, with several lots in the market being final consignments, including hoggs which would be classed as stores. Well-finished hoggs were very easily sold and more could have been sold to advantage, under finished hoggs were selling to realisation. There was an overall market average of 220p/kg, medium specification hoggs (39-45.5kgs) averaged 237p/kg. The day’s trade was topped by a pen of heavy weight Suffolk hoggs from E Needham of Stainton selling to £133, closely followed by D Metcalfe of Dalton in Furness selling to £130 and £129. Texels sold to a top of £128 for heavy weights from JB Airey of Kendal. Beltex x hoggs sold to a top of 273p/kg from Messrs Hodgson of Windermere closely followed by PJ Onions of Arkholme selling to 270p/kg

Cast Sheep

Cast Sheep continue to be a good trade at J36 with an entry just over 300 forward. Topping the day’s trade were Suffolk ewes from E Needham of Stainton at £137, with others to £130. Well-fleshed ewes sold well, with Continental ewes selling to £131 from D Metcalfe of Dalton in Furness and Beltex ewes to £129 from AE Atkinson & Son of Endmoor. Half bred sheep sold to £104 for Mashams from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock, with the breed averaging £84.82. Mule ewes selling to £100 twice from W Garnett & Son of Milnthorpe and G Riley of Bolton-le-Sands, with all Mules in the market averaging £70.36. Horned sheep sold well, with premium prices being achieved for well-finished ewes. Dalesbreds sold to £76 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock, with Swales to £65 from JF Benson of Ambleside. Cast Rams sold to £142 from JF Cook of Witherslack for Bluefaced Leicesters, who also sold others to £139.
