Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a smaller entry forward today with 1349 with the trade being less on the week, as seen later on Monday afternoon. An overall market average 164p/kg was achieved, with 39-45kg lambs averaging 168p/kg. Once again, Beltex Lambs were in strong demand at J36 selling to a top 225p/kg or £94.50 from from George Bell, Red Lodge selling to Higginsons Butchers of Grange-over-Sands with MR & MW Black, Scroggs Farm also achieving 225p/kg. This was closely followed by JG & PH Thomspon, Poppy Farm selling to 223p/kg and 217p/kg. Beltex lambs sold to an overall average of 207p/kg.

The edge was slightly off heavy weight lambs today with 50kg lambs topping at £90 for Texels from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof Hall and Suffolks topped at £88.50 from DM & D Cook, Smithy Green Farm. Once again, plenty of heavy weight lambs were selling in the eighties.

Mules topped at £88.50 today for 53kg lambs from F & SA Edmondson, Netherhouses Farm, with other heavy-weight Mules selling to £82.50 from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar. 265 Mules in the market today sold to an average of £71.20.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of Cast Ewes today saw 588 in the market, meeting plenty of demand. Big Continental Ewes and Ram continue to sell well, topping at £118 for Texel ewes from EJ & AM Fox with Cast tups topped at £109 from JC Dunning of Low Chapel Farm. Leicester tups topped at £94 from JA Bennet of Middale Farm.

Horned tups sold to a top price of £75 with Rough Fells from H Chapman & Son, Mill Beck and Mule ewes topped at £74 JG, EM & JA Atkinson, Low Groves Farm. Big Mule and Masham ewes were selling in the early seventies. Best, fit horned ewes sold around the forty pound mark, with smaller types selling in the late twenties.

A billy goat, born this year, sold to £44 from I Carradice of Tebay.
