Store Cattle

The weekly Store Cattle sale at Lancaster saw a mixed entry of quality forward today with the trade slighter harder work, especially leaner types, as there are talks of the prime cattle price slipping a little.

Bullocks sold to a high of £1370 and £1350 for a Limousin from RH Dodgson of Burton in Lonsdale. Aberdeen Angus Bullocks topped at £1340 for a pen of four from AG Stafford of Out Rawcliffe. Thirty seven cattle sold in excess of £1200 with a dozen selling in excess of £1300. Limousin Heifers sold to a top of £1300 from Phoenix Grain of Tarleton.

Friesian Bullocks sold to £1080 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe, with strongest, fittest black and whites still selling in excess of £1000.

Cast Cows

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a similar entry of 88 forward. The trade saw well fleshed, meaty cows selling to a sharper trade than the previous week with lean and plainer type cows selling to a similar trade.

The market average saw an overall average of 122p/kg with all black and whites selling to 114p/kg.

OTM Aberdeen Angus Steers sold to 189.5p/kg from J Maxell of Halton. Young Beef Cows saw better types sell either side of the 180p/kg mark, topping at 181.5p/kg from R Eshborn of Glasson Dock for a Limousin.

Best black and white cows topped at 147.5p/kg from JB & JB Lawson of Cockerham with other well fleshed dairy cows selling around the 140p/kg mark. Selling in excess of £1100 per head, topping at £1272 was a dairy cow, once again, from JB & JB Lawson, with others to £1228 from P & M Crackles of Burrow.

Calves

The monthly sale of Stirks had a larger entry than advertised with 90 forward, selling to another competitive trade, with younger, softer Stirks slightly harder to place this month due to the weather.

The best yearling Bullocks sold in the region of £800 with British Blues topping at £845 from MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham and Aberdeen Angus Bullocks to £815 and £800 from ME Forshaw & Son of Thornley. Suckler Bred Limousin Bullocks at eight months old from T Ayrton & Sons sold to £765 and £760. Dairy bred bullocks saw Fleckviehs top at £720 at seven months old.

Heifers saw yearling British Blues sell to £720 and £685 from MJ & K Ayrton, with Aberdeen Angus Heifers the same age sell to £705 and £690 from ME Forshaw and Son.

The weekly sale of Calves saw an entry of over 50 calves forward, mainly consisting of Black and Whites selling to a similar trade with many of the Black and Whites forward being very Holstein type calves.

The calf trade topped at £330 for Aberdeen Angus Bull Calves from Phillip Halhead of Cockerham who also sold British Blue Bulls to £315, all just over a month of age.

Aberdeen Angus Heifers sold to £315 and £305 from Joylan Farms of St Michaels.

Black and White Bull Calves saw better rearing calves on milk sell over the £100 mark and nicer dark sorts in excess of £150, topping at £158 from J & M Sanderson of Kirkham. A lot of young Black and Whites between 2 and 3 weeks of age saw the nice dark rearing types sell between £50 and £70.
