Spring Lambs

There was the largest entry of Spring Lambs this season so far with 1095 going under the gavel. As seen nationwide lambs prices have slipped with Junction 36 averaging 234p/kg beating many local centres on the day.

Once again, top quality lambs were easily sold and more could have been sold and to the advantage of the vendor. Topping the trade was JA & VM Lamb of Conder Green selling Beltex lambs to 283p/kg or £116. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £114 from D Metcalfe of Dalton in Furness and Suffolk Mules sold to £110 from R & J Dodgson of Natland. Texels topped at £111 from KR & CR Williamson of Beckfoot.

A large entry of lightweight lambs between 30-37kg saw 37kg lambs from IL Dixon of Cantsfield selling to a top of £100. Lightweight lambs between 32-37kg sold to a market average of 232p/kg with exactly 500 forward within this weight category. First Mule lambs of the season forward saw 40kg lambs from Tom Ladds selling to £85.

Prime Hoggs

There was a smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward with a mixed entry in terms of quality saw well fleshed Hoggs selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. Topping the sale was Linda Beck of Endmoor selling Texel Hoggs to 211p/kg or £110 from. Hoggs will be required next week for the upcoming festival end.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of Cast Ewes forward this week sold to the continued strong trade with all buyers eager to purchase ewes of all specifications. A consignment of Texel ewes from RT & ME Sutton of Stainton sold to a top of £112 and £116.
Plenty of continental ewes easily sold in excess of the £100 mark. Strongest Mule ewes sold in over the £80 mark topping at £85 for a pen of 13 from GCL Stephenson LTD of Deansbiggin. Leaner Mules sold around the £70 mark. Well fleshed horned ewes and hill bred ewes were good to sell with Herdwicks topping at £76 from WG & D Wilkinson of Coniston and Rough Fells selling to £75 from CP Bateman of Docker. Scotch Blackface Ewes from JH Barker and Son of Ulverston sold to £69 and Swaledales from RS & BA Harker of Holme sold to £67. Plenty of pens of fit Swaledale Ewes were easily selling round the £60 mark with plainer types between £40 and £50.

Pigs

The monthly sale of all types of Pigs had an entry of 75 forward. There was a mixed entry of Prime Pigs forward with not as many top quality pigs on offer this week as sometimes seen. Heavy weight gilts sold to a top of £130 from AP Smith of Brookhouse with Boars selling to £128 from TS Wilson of Cockermouth. Pigs sold to a top of 146p/kg from J Cookson of Kendal.

A few Cast pigs forward this week saw Cast Sows sell to £102 from E Lawson of Sedbergh with large Cast Sows regularly around the £100 mark. A strong store pig trade saw DC Miller of Claughton on Brock top the trade with Store Gilts selling to £105 and Boars to £100. Weaner from A Sealby of Carlisle top at £80 with pietrain gilts.
