Store Cattle

A few more store cattle in the market today as the trade continues to be strong with all cattle eagerly bid for. Nearly 20% of the cattle forward for the sale sold for £1,200 or more topping at £1,350 three times.

Limousin bullocks topped at £1,350 firstly from PM & ST Entwistle of Abbeystead and secondly by DE & SM Moorhouse of Natland with Blonde heifers also selling to £1,350 from Blackburn and Wood of Out Rawcliffe. Native cattle continue to sell well at Lancaster with Angus heifers selling to £1270 from JS &KM Wilson of High House with bullocks to £1260 from J & R Waller of Killington. A sharper black and white and young store cattle trade was had today with many purchasers now looking to grass day and requiring grazing cattle.

OTM Cattle

A smaller entry of cast cows in the market today on a day in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of vendors with another strong trade enjoyed at Lancaster. Cows sold to a top of 171.5p/kg from WT Whitaker and Son of Nether Kellet with best types of meated cows selling in and around 140p/kg. All black and whites sold to a market average of 116p/kg. A couple of cast bulls in the market today topped with angus bulls from JF & D Hewitt of Nateby selling to £1225 and Black and white bulls selling to £1170.

Calves and Stirks

The spring show and sale of calves under 56 days was held on Friday 7th April. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Liz Hoggarth of Dent who had some good quality calves on offer to judge. The championship rosette was awarded to David and Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead with a British Blue bull calf, a very stylish calf with plenty of shape. The reserve champion was awarded to CR & A Baxter of Morecambe with a British Blue heifer shown by Liam.

A buoyant trade was had throughout with a great atmosphere and a few fresh and returning calf buyers were around the ring. The champion British blue bull sold to £400 David and Eileen Wallbank with the second prized beef bull calf selling to £390 from the same good home.

The trade topped at £445 for weaned British Blue bulls from G & ME Woodhouse & Son of Boldens Farm, a strong trade saw all British Blue bull calves average £391.43. The reserve champion British Blue heifer calf topped the heifer trade selling to £340 from CR & A Baxter. Hereford heifer calves sold to £275 and £270 from FW Rhodes of Barrow Greaves with Hereford bulls from the same home selling to £275.

A good black and white trade with good rearing calves sold in excess of the £100 mark. Trade topped at £195 for weaned calves from G & ME Woodhouse & Son of Boldens Farm. First prized black and white bull calf from David and Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead sold to £155 with the second and third prize from Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale selling to £140 with all black and whites forward averaging £94.89.
